Dropping the I Word

One thing that I often get mad heat for is for my deletion of comments that I deem to be hate speech. More often than not, because of the extensive coverage VivirLatino gives to the issue of immigration, the word “illegal” is the top offender (“go back where you came from” is a close second). I have been called against free speech and have had people attempt to use my personal life against me because of my decisions when it comes to deleting hateful comments. Just like the earlier campaign against racial profiling, yesterday’s launch of the Drop the I Word campaign by Colorlines and the Applied Research Center, aims to connect the dots between hate speech and hate actions.

Immigrant detention in Greece

Greece-Pagani-7Needless to say, immigrant detention is not a sin committed solely by the U.S.. From Devious Diva comes this horrible story about the state of detention centers in Greece.

When we arrived, women had not been allowed out of their cell into the yard for a few days. One of the first things we did was arrange for the children to leave the cell, and we accompanied them to visit their fathers in the rooms at the front part of the building. That was a very touching moment for us to see the fathers hugging their small children through the bars of the cell, many of them crying. We also asked the police to allow the children to go out in the yard, where we organized some group activities, so that children could make drawings and play. The psychologist was also able to conduct some individual sessions with patients, who needed special attention.

One father kept asking us about his wife and his newborn child that had been born a few days ago in the local hospital. His wife and the baby were still in the hospital and he was not allowed to visit them there. He was worried that his wife and his newborn baby would be brought back to the detention center. He was also afraid that he and his family would die in there.

It’s heartbreaking how the question of immigration always boils down to the same thing–violence inflicted on loved ones. It’s not “aliens” being forced to hug fathers through prison bars. It’s not “illegals” that have to go days and weeks without knowing if wives made it through childbirth–it’s human beings.

Something tells me the reasons human violations like these are even possible–or greatly applauded–is because the campaign to dehumanize immigrants through words like “illegal aliens” and “illegals” has been far too successful.

What say you, President Obama?

19151956.jpgNeed someone to blame for the economic downturn, for the mortgage crisis? Look no farther than Maria y Jose. That’s right it’s those damn illegal immigrants (or some would have you believe). After all they control the money and the system that controls that. No? DreamActivist writes over at The Sanctuary:

Why, don’t you know, those migrant workers, low-income wage-earners, illegals in the military, undocumented students struggling to afford college, caused the financial collapse of Wall Street, Main Street, all streets!! Now we need a $700 billion dollar bailout for them!

Sylvia P
also follows the path atras, as to who really is to blame.

It started with the ambitions of a single illegal alien.

That’s right. I said it. We have no time for political correctness now. If Sen. McCain can suspend his campaign, I can suspend my intelligence to state things plainly. And plainly, my investment banker siblings, it always starts with one.

And we ignored the signs, even when it appeared in the news way back when the Mexicans first began ousting CEOs.

New ICE Policy Wants Undocumented to Raise Hands and Self-Deport

1:24 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration|Politics · Comments Off

31 Jul 2008

raise%20your%20hand.jpgTo me this is the stupidest idea ever and the worst attempt at trying to play nice and act as if they are compassionate. Immigration and Customs Enforcement aka ICE’s Director announced on Sunday Operation Scheduled Departure.

The announcement of the program by Julie Myers, on Univision’s popular show ‘Al Punto’ con Jorge Ramos, is considered unofficial, as the program which asks undocumented immigrants without prior criminal records to turn themselves in to ICE to be deported, has yet to be announced or mentioned in an official capacity or through any other media outlet.

The benefit to the undocumented? ICE will be nice enough to not put the immigrants in a detention center and will give the immigrants a few weeks to get their affairs in order (like figure out who the leave the children they will be forced to leave with?)

Aww isn’t ICE nice?

illegal.jpg When you hear the word “Alien”, do you think little green men from mars or do you think of Mexicans and other Latinos? According to the National Association of Hispanic Journalist (NAHJ), the language being used in the mainstream media to detail the current immigration debate dehumanizes and stereotypes. NAHJ, a 2,300-member organization of reporters, editors and other journalists, is calling the mainstream media out on their use of language and the impact it has in framing the immigration. The NAHJ is giving a historical context for the words being used in the media and offering alternative word choices. Their Resource Guide for Journalists states for example :

While Webster’s first definition of the term “alien” is in accordance with the government’s interpretation, the dictionary also includes other, darker, meanings for the word, such as “a non-terrestrial being,” “strange,” “not belonging to one,” “adverse,” “hostile.” And the Encyclopedia Britannica points out that “in early times, the tendency was to look upon the alien as an enemy and to treat him as a criminal or an outlaw.” It is not surprising then that in 1798, in anticipation of a possible war with France, the U.S. Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts, which restricted “aliens” and curtailed press freedoms. By 1800 the laws had been repealed or had expired but they still cast a negative shadow over the word. In modern times, with science-fiction growing in popularity, “alien” has come to mean a creature from outer space, and is considered pejorative by most immigrants.

Must Read: “La Nueva Orleans”

4:03 pm By Maegan La Mala · Lifestyle|Politics · Comments Off

26 Sep 2005

building.jpgGregory Rodriguez, a contributing editor to the LA Times is making a big prediction. In his recent article, “La Nueva Orleans”, Rodriguez states that the population of rebuilt New Orleans will look quite different than the pre-Katrina New Orleans. More specifically, he says that New Orleans will have such a large Latino population that it will resemble Los Angeles.

On September 6, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) temporarily suspended a sanction that requires employers to have proof of citizenship for their workers. This suspension is in effect for at least 45 days from the day of issue, and could be renewed.

An excerpt from the article:

Because they are young and lack roots in the United States, many recent migrants are ideal for the explosion of construction jobs to come. Those living in the U.S. will relocate to the Gulf Coast, while others will come from south of the border. Most will not intend to stay where their new jobs are, but the longer the jobs last, the more likely they will settle permanently. One recent poll of New Orleans evacuees living in Houston emergency shelters found that fewer than half intend to return home. In part, their places will be taken by the migrant workers. Former President Clinton recently hinted as much on NBC’s “Meet the Press” when he said New Orleans will be resettled with a different population.

I encourage all Vivirlatino readers to check out the entire article, even though you may have to fill out a registration form to access it.
