Caracas Mayor Ends his Hunger Strike

9 Jul 2009

Yesterday we told you about how Caracas’ mayor, Antonio Ledezma, was holding out on the 6th day of a hunger strike in protest of the government of Hugo Chávez. Later in the day, Ledezma — very frail after having not eaten or drank anything in nearly a week — agreed to end his protest after the Secretary General of the Organization of American States said he would be willing to hear the allegations being made against Chávez.

Video showed crowds of people surrounding the mayor, who had a Venezuelan flag draped on his chest, as he was moved on a stretcher to an ambulance.

The secretary general of the OAS, Jose Miguel Insulza, called the mayor on Wednesday urging him to end the hunger strike, the Globovision network reported.

In an earlier conversation, Insulza told Ledezma he was willing to meet with a delegation of Venezuelan mayors and governors to hear their allegations against Chavez

I hate to be skeptical, but I don’t really believe much is going to come out of the OAS Secretary listening to complaints. Like it or not, Chávez has set it up so where he will stay in power no matter what neighbors and allies might think. Habrá Chávez para rato.

BOLIVIA-REFERENDUM-MORALESIt’s breakfast time on the West Coast, but way down south in Bolivia, nobody’s eating. President Evo Morales has called a hunger strike to “defend the vote of the people”. What’s he talking about? Morales and supporters want to put pressure on the Bolivian congress to approve a bill which would set a date for general elections — elections in which Morales is poised to win re-election. AP reports:

Bolivia’s opposition-led Senate has failed to approve a law to handle the elections, which are mandated by a Morales-backed constitutional reform approved by voters in January.

The socialist president, who took office in 2006, has suggested opposition leaders are trying to block the planned December elections with delaying tactics.

While they won’t be eating, AP reports that the President and his supporters will be drinking water and chewing coca leaves.

guantanamo.jpgGuantanamo Bay is known for its U.S. military prison containing so-called “terrorists” but currently it is also housing Cubans who are in a legal limbo that keeps them out of the U.S. mainland and outside of Cuba while being technically within its geography.

Since July 29 the Cuban migrants have been on a liquid only hunger strike in protest against the U.S.’s decision to keep them off the U.S. mainland. According to what is commonly known as the U.S’s wet-foot-dry-foot policy, Cubans who make it to U.S. soil are generally allowed to stay, while those caught at sea are sent home.

24 Mar 2006

bc_060322fastimmigfedbldg5571g_100.jpg On Tuesday over 50 hunger strikers and organizations began a 7 day protest in front of the San Francisco Federal Building. This action is being coordinated to protest Senator Arlen Specter’s bill that designates all undocumented immigrants as aggravated felons, allows for the indefinite detention of non-citizens, and criminalizes day-labor centers, churches, health clinics and all others who serve, help or work with undocumented immigrants. Monday, March 27th will be the final day of the hunger strike.
