Whenever election day rolls around I am reminded of a few things. One is that imfamous phrase, “The Latino Swing Vote“. This idea, that Latinos because of our sheer numbers can make or break an elecion has led to positives like non-partisan voter registration drives and has led to negatives like politicians pandering to “Latino interests” with a slew of commercials of them speaking really bad Spanish or with Latino celebs/politicos singing Que Linda Manita. I am reminded of Malcolm X’s famous speech, The Ballot or the Bullet. I am reminded of the late Richie Perez and how he always said that there are many weapons at our disposal for revolution and voting is one of those tools.

With election campaigns in full swing all over the United States, there actually hasn’t been too much pandering to the Latino community. Personally I haven’t seen an overwhelming number of campaign ads interupt the evening novelas (with the exception of Willie Colon singing Que Linda Manita over and over for Eliot Spitzer) and I certainly haven’t seen huge voter registration and education efforts happening in the Latino neighborhoods here in NYC. Both Democrats and Republicans have however launched ads that have offended the Latino community, likening us, especially immigrants, with terrorists. If the recent numbers coming out of the Pew Hispanic Center are right, both parties are losing out by not inviting us in to join.
