According what feels like every news org in NY, the New York State Senate has voted to expel State Senator Hiram Monserrate. The 53 to 8 vote was based on Monserrate’s conviction for assaulting his girlfriend.

Not surprisingly, Monserrate is already mounting an appeal with high profile attorney Norman Siegel representing him. Monserrate and his supporters feel like the expulsion vote is about more than domestic violence (because apparently that’s not enough). Some feel it’s payback for Monserrate siding with the GOP during a “coup” that kept the lawmaking body at a standstill. Of course there is also the matter of Monserrate voting against marriage equity in New York State. This could set a precedent, with Monserrate being the first state senator to be kicked out for a misdemeanor conviction.

I’m supposed to be working another job right now and not blogging, pero I wanted to express extreme disappointment in the The Marriage Equality Act not passing in the NY State Senate.
The vote was 38-24.

Hiram Monserrate, my state senator, whom I have written about, apparently has no love for women, and has no love for the many LGBT residents in his district and trust me, there are many. He, a Democrat, voted against the act, and I would be more than down to help organize some sort of protest in front of this vendegente’s office.

2009_03_monserrate-thumb-250x208-73969How do we deal with men in our communities who hurt the women in our community? And I’m not just talking about our physical communities like our neighbors or relatives. What of those who claim to represent us in public office.

I wrote about my discomfort surrounding the NYC State Senator Hiram Monserrate case when charges first surfaced against him, accusing him of attacking his girlfriend. It feels complicated for me on multiple levels. Monserratte was my local council person and he is my local state senator. That never has stopped me before. That wasn’t it. I had dealings with Monserrate before he was involved in electoral politics, when he worked with the Latino Police Officers Association here in NYC and he and his organization stood with the Latino families of those killed by police brutality and us organizers. As a Latina who has dealt with domestic violence both personally, politically, and professionally, how did this man whom I identified as a defender of the community suddenly become an attacker?

I take mi cafe con leche y azucar, and some links on the side. Here’s what I’m reading this Saturday morning:

Not NOW : NY State Senator accused of attacking girlfriend, isn’t happy at NOW-NYS.

Where was this tax workshop when Mala needed it?

Forget Valentine’s Day especially when you can have Mistress Day.

2008_12_hirmm.jpgI have been reluctant to comment on the current legal and personal problems of my local NYC Councilperson and soon to be NY State Senator Hiram Monserrate. Last week, Monseratte was arrested on domestic violence charges against his girlfriend, Karla Giraldo, after he brought her to a hospital miles away from their home with a black eye and a gash that required 20 stitches to close.

The story gets sketchy after that. Monseratte has been charged with felony assault and insists that he tripped and fell with a glass in his hand. Others are saying that there was a struggle after Monseratte found “drugs” in Giraldo’s purse. There is even talk in the media about Monseratte being a Scientologist.
