Shakiralacio.jpgSoon enough we all won’t have to hear Hips Don’t Lie anymore because Colombiana songstress, Shakira is allegedly working on an album to be released in the fall.

Finally!

shakira.jpgIs anyone else getting a little tired of Shakira. Don’t get me wrong, I think she’s beautiul and talented and respect much of her humanitarian work but I think my hips have had enough of Hips Don’t Lie (or maybe my daughter just plays Shaki’s music too damn much). The general population can’t seem to get enough the Colombiana and her caderas. Shakira and her song were granted the People’s Choice Award in the catagory of Pop Song of 2006 on January 9th in Los Angeles. Shakira wasn’t presente at the ceremony because she’s in Europe prepping for her tour there.

Shakira nominated for 6 Latin grammies

9547385.jpgFor all of you out there who are fed up with hearing Hips Don’t Lie, you’ll have to get used to the fact that it ain’t going anywhere anytime soon. That’s because Shakira has been nominated for 6 Latin Grammy awards this year, so you’ll be hearing it in lead up ad nauseum, though it wasn’t nominated (is it because it’s in English?) giving way to La Tortura.

Second in line with the most nominations are several old faves, each with four nods:

Poetic singer/songwriter Ricardo Arjona, Argentine rocker Gustavo Cerati and Mexican pop/alternative chanteusse Julieta Venegas with four nods each. Cerati’s album, “Ahi Vamos,” will compete in the album of the year category against Shakira and Venegas’ “Sal y Limon.”

The awards will air on Univision on November 2nd, and since God knows they won’t give us press credentials, we’ll likely be live-blogging it from our couches.

shakira.jpgA little while back Jen wrote about Colombian singer and hip shaker Shakira being called out by Rican salsero Jerry Rivera for using a trumpet rif from his song Amores Como lo Nuestro in her hit song Hips Don’t Lie without his permission. Many of you wrote in defending Shakira and Jerry Rivera, some even saying that the trumpets had been used in other songs. Well someone forgot to send the memo to Jerry because in today’s El Diaro/LA Prensa Jerry is quoted as saying from Peru:

Si Shakira dice que antes había sido utilizado por otro artista, pues que lo demuestre, porque yo no lo sabía. ¡Quiero escucharlo!

So who is gonna send Jerry the MP3?

shakira-the-cure-highlight-french-show.jpgShakira’s English-language hit “Hips Don’t Lie” became the most played song in pop history earlier this week, according to Nielsen. Via Top-40Charts.com:

“Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean became the most played song in pop radio history TODAY according to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems. The song was played more times in the week ending 6/4/06 beating out the previous record by Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” made in the week ending 6/5/05. Shakira’s song’s total of 9,657 times played on the radio, broke Stefani’s previous record of 9,582.

Now I realize why I am starting to hate this song. I really liked it at first, but like anything else, and as they say on beer commercials “nada con exceso…todo con medida“.

In addition to boasting the most played song in history, Shakira

…also recently became the first artist in the history of the charts to earn the coveted No 1 Top 40 Mainstream song and No 1 Latin song in the same week and still holds the No 1 spot on the Latin chart.

Quite an accomplishment.

billboardlatino2005jpg.jpg I’ll admit to being a little bit amargada that I couldn’t be in Miami tonight covering the Latin Billboard Awards live but I’ve tuned into Telemundo anyway to see the promised excitement and well so far am finding the same old same old. Daddy Yankee had his entrance exagerado. RBD was nominated three times in one category and won (oh what a surprise-bring it on RBD fans). Shakira won within the first 10 minutes of the show and looked casual and comfy against the parade of novela protagonistas with over the top gowns and culo baring dancers. There was a well deserved tribute to Rocio Durcal and my favorite performance, given by the Cubano hip hoppers, Orishas. Shakira just took stage singing Hips Don’t Lie with Wycliff Jean. And with that I think I’ll call it a night. I’m sure whatever I miss will be on Cada Día with Maria Antonieta Collins in the morning.

shakira%27s.jpg It’s a wet dream come true for many a Latino, that is Shakira and soccer coming together. Shaki’s record label, Sony-BMG, announced that the Colombiana will be singing a very special version of her current hit with Fugee Wyclef Jean, Hips Don’t Lie, at the closing ceremony of the World Cup in Germany. The special performance is scheduled for July 9, 10 minutes before the Cup final in the Olympic Stadium of Berlin.
