Being from the same state as Eminem–I have a love/hate relationship with him. On the one hand, I love seeing somebody from home succeed, on the other hand…DAYMN. Does he have to be such an offensive asshole?

Here’s his latest song/video (pissed off trigger warning–I’m not kidding when I say that this video will more than likely piss you off, don’t watch unless you’re ready for it!):

Eminem gets just enough disparaging mocking stuff on himself that I think we’re all supposed to laugh and not *truly* be offended. And honestly, I think that I would be not *truly* offended if it weren’t for the image of the woman being shoved through the grinder. I know he is referencing this old Hustler cover (NSFW and potentially triggering)–but frankly, there are some things that just never should be referenced except in a disparaging sense. Especially given the fact that women are being murdered in his own home state. It’s one thing to make fat jokes and gross druggie jokes, it’s another thing all together to introduce a whole new generation of men to the idea that violence against women is a joke or “ironic” or hip.

And on a side note, I notice that Eminem hasn’t had much to say about how domestic violence is treated within the hip/hop community. And it’s not like women in the hip/hop community haven’t demanded that domestic violence be addressed. And frankly, until Eminem can see fit to support the female hip/hopers out there, he can take his “irony” and his “sarcasm” and shove it.

Hip/Hop Artists Raise HIV/AIDS Awareness

black%20AIDS%20institute.jpgFolks down in Texas were treated to an apparently awesome concert that was also a worthy cause. Mike Jones, David Banner and Day26 (among others) performed a “Hip Hop for HIV” concert to bring attention to the effect HIV/AIDS are having on the black and Latin@ communities. Concert goers received tickets for the concert by getting tested. And although the outreach targeted black and Latin@ communities, the testing was meant for everyone,

“We want to test across the board,” Mr. Jones said. “We don’t just want to reach out to the African-American and Hispanic communities but to everyone.”

I think it’s great that outreach like this is happening, especially given the homophobia that many times courses through mainstream Hip/Hop. I hope it means that the LGBT community is more accepted now, although the pessimistic me thinks it’s more likely that folks are thinking HIV/AIDS is “not just the gay disease anymore.”

Latino Hip-Hop mag capitalizes on Reggaeton craze

bridgez-1stissue.jpgIt was bound to happen some time soon. Gotta jump on that money-making bandwagon before Reggaeton is dead and gone. The publication is called Bridgez and it’s out to fill the dead space in the Latino urban media world:

“This magazine fills a void in the market which has existed for far too long,” added Gonzalez. “Latinos have been involved in Hip-Hop since day one. In fact, in our first issue we reveal that D.M.C., one of the founders of Hip-Hop, is actually of Dominican descent. Latinos deserve to be acknowledged for their contributions to Hip-Hop past and present; and that’s our goal.”
