All eyes are on Mexico with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arriving there. Yesterday, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano revealed a border security plan that was allegedly less about undocumented immigrants and more about protecting the “us” from the violence coming from “them”. And next month U.S. President Obama will meet with Mexican President Calderon to discuss “their” problem.

I think that it’s important to note that the Obama administration is sending a clear signal that it is going to follow the safety first rhetoric that the Bush administration nearly perfected, that is the rhetoric that before we talk human rights, especially those of immigrants, we need to make sure we are protected from them.

Who are they?

They are the drug cartels and human traffickers. Now don’t get me wrong the violence is horrible but violence in Mexico isn’t anything new. Look specifically at the massive killing of women in Juarez. Pero the U.S. gets down to business when college students worry about their spring break vacation plans being ruined.
350 additional security personnel will be sent to the border including agents from the Department of Homeland Security, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Border Enforcement Security Task Forces (BEST) teams will be doubled and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is to create a special south-west intelligence group to co-ordinate all its efforts to tackle Mexican drug-related crime.

ATF is to send 100 agents to the border within 45 days to crack down on illegal gun transfers from the US into Mexico.

They are the undocumented coming into the U.S. protected by plants that conspire to hide them. So part of the plan includes spraying potentially harmful chemicals to kill the plants that help to hide “them”.

Perhaps I shouldn’t be so cynical and hold out hope for the new administration. Napolitano did mention how U.S. drug consumption is helping to fuel the cartel violence. Hmm but no mention of how the current drug policy is the U.S. including mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines have increased the prison population. Napolitano did mention how walls aren’t an especially helpful security plan but that parts of the border wall under construction will be finished and other parts reinforced with technology.

Feel safer yet? I know in my neighborhood, on this side of the border and in neighborhoods across the country, families are growing restless with their growing insecurity. ICE is still conducting raids. Families are still be separated. When will the security of many many U.S. citizen children with undocumented parents matter? How long will they have to wait while the rest of us sit back feeling safe and sound?

Ugly Betty Really Wants Clinton in Obama White House

s-FERRAR-large.jpgUgly Betty’s America Ferrara, a longtime supporter of Secretary of State nominee Hillary Clinton, is putting her money where her mouth is. The Latina actress is hosting a “conversation” with the one time presidential candidate on December 15th, with the goal of getting rid of the $7.5 million debt left behind after her failed campaign.

Clinton’s presidential campaign committee sent an e-mail to supporters on Thursday, inviting them to participate in a conversation with the former first lady in New York City on Monday, Dec. 15, which will feature special guest Bill Clinton and will be hosted by America Ferrera, the “Ugly Betty” star who first announced her support for Clinton in January 2008 and campaigned for her in Nevada and Pennsylvania.

Hillary Clinton Secretary of State?

hillary-clinton.jpgThe latest Obama Presidential Cabinet pick could be one of his former competitors, New York Senator Hillary Clinton.

Various mainstream news sources are reporting that Clinton is being considered for the Secretary of State post.

What do you all think? A good choice or not? It certainly would make alot of women happy.

The California Clinton Delegates held a meeting after their California breakfast yesterday. Gloria Allred (Clinton Delegate and women’s rights attorney) led the pact by first saying she wanted to addresses the full delegation but was denied. She implied that the Obama campaign didn’t want that to happen. Then she requested a speech today at their delegation breakfast, but again denied. So she held a unofficial meeting with Clinton delegates. She explained “today is the 88th anniversary when women won the right to vote.” With an emphasis on won because she said “it wasn’t given to us women fought hard and long.” She went on to explain with her legal advice that the Delegates are legally bonded to vote for Hillary but most importantly they were elected to do us and they promised the voters who elected them that they would. She said

“it’s my opinion from the DNC rule that we must honor the results of each primary.”

On the outskirts of the meeting Obama delegates look over with disgusted expressions. I find that funny though, because if Obama lost with long primary season then they would want his votes counted too!

No, I’m not talking about America Ferrera I’m talking about the great Senator of New York Hillary Clinton. Yesterday, she surprised DNC Hispanic Caucus goers and gave a heart felt speech filled with commitment for the issues that matter the most for Hispanics. She spoke about comprehensive immigration reform and a stronger education system. She spoke to the heart to us, she said “I knows there maybe language Barriers but it doesn’t matter we are all American and we are all strong and we all deserve a system that works and Barack Obama and Joe Biden are going to bring that to all of us.”

She lastly addressed the cynical and GOP bigwig John McCain. She addressed the manipulative ad that his campaign started airing that included clips of her attacks on Obama.

Even though I agree with those critiques (because they are true) the GOP is making me sick with their same old tactic. The GOP should try to refresh their strategies to win an election besides frying your opponent to a crisp with vindictive ads. Hillary responded by saying “I’m Hillary Clinton, and I do not approve that message.” I think that explains why Americans should love Hillary.

I caught this new McCain ad as I waited to board my plane to Denver yesterday. My initial reaction was : How the hell is it McCain’s business why Obama didn’t pick Clinton as his running mate (it probably has nothing to do with the pretty overt racism carried out by her campaign- right?).

“Yes We Can” Says Sen. Clinton

On Saturday, Hillary Rodham Clinton officially suspended her historic bid for the White House. She and Sen. Barack Obama had been the center of a bitter Democratic Presidential Nomination race. Though on this past Tuesday he finally pulled enough of the “super delegates” to win the nomination. Sen. Clinton was ridiculed for her failure to bow out on Tuesday. Many political pundits found her speech more of a victory speech than a concession. So she had her work cut out for her on this past Saturday afternoon when she ended her campaign.

President Clinton , Sen Clinton, Daughter Chelsea, and Mother Dorothy Rodham had all arrived at the National Building Museum in Washington,D.C. late to find thousands of supporters awaiting their entrance. When she finally arrived the crowd roared in applause. She spoke of the barriers she broke for women and the unity of the Democratic party. She spoke highly of Sen. Barack Obama when saying ” I stand with Sen. Barack Obama and say yes we can.” Also adding “the Democratic Party is a family, and now it’s time to restore the ties that bind us together.”

She spoke of the 18 million voters that supported her. She implied she would do anything , some saying that includes the Vice-Presidency.
After watching the speech, I can say this is the real Hillary Clinton that we all should have seen on the campaign trail. I will look in retrospect and write if she started this strong she would have found a different result in the winner of the nomination.

Many say this is the death of the Clinton clan, but I know this is just the beginning for Sen. Clinton’s individual political life. I will predict that she will be back in 2012 if Sen. Obama loses this November. Even in 2016 she will be back if he does win in November and wins reelection. She will be younger than President Ronald Reagan and Sen.John McCain if she does decide to run again in eight years. She has a rather large chance at becoming the Vice-President with 18 million supporters hoping for that outcome. She could even run for the Governorship in New York in 2010. The point is Sen. Hillary R. Clinton is not going anywhere, in fact she is just getting comfortable.

splitobamahil.jpgLast night, cable news was abuzz with the fact that the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama, was meeting with his one-time rival, Hillary Clinton. The meeting occurred in Clinton’s Washington D.C. home, which the pundits labeled “an act of graciousness” on the part of Obama. The talking heads wondered: were the two meeting alone or were there more people inside the shaded house surrounded by dark windowed vehicles? Would Hillary ask to be Barack’s running mate? CNN made the meeting sound more dramatic than a novela.

But in a dramatic twist, this doesn’t mean that Clinton is closing shop, at least not completely. Apparently, she is only suspending her campaign. This means, that her statewide pledged delegates and district-level delegates remain her delegates, and that in some strange way she’s still labeled “a contender”. Clinton is expected to announce the suspension tomorrow.

Good morning. While you were sleeping, the last two Democratic primaries in the U.S. went down last night. Barack Obama won Montana and Hillary Clinton won South Dakota. Barack Obama scored enough delegates to become the Democratic nominee. John McCain said that primary season was over and that Barack Obama was the nominee. Hillary Clinton made a speech that didn’t say that Barack Obama was the nominee and almost sounded like she was still running for president.
