It’s been almost a year since Labor Secretary Hilda Solis announced the suspension of Bush era changes to the H-2A agricultural guest worker program. Today, Solis announced today reinstatement of protections including remedying cutbacks in labor protections and restoring the requirement that U.S. workers be hired before foreign laborers are imported, a protection weakened under the Bush regulations.

I think it’s important to offer protection for the guest workers that are here, especially in the absence of a comprehensive immigration reform bill or plan, for that matter. It does not however solve the larger multiple issues involved in guest worker visa programs.

s001153Labor Secretary Hilda Solis wasted no time in getting down to business after being sworn in last week. Her first major move was to reverse a last minute Bush change to the H-2A agricultural guestworker program.

The changes lowered the wage formula and reduced government oversight in an industry already rife with abuses against migrant workers.

On Solís’ first day in office, the Labor Department announced in a statement “the proposed suspension for nine months” of the rule. Solís said in the release:

Because many stakeholders have raised concerns about the H-2A regulations, this proposed suspension is the prudent and responsible action to take.

Suspending the rule would allow the department to review and reconsider the regulation, while minimizing disruption to state workforce agencies, employers and workers.

So nice to see some movement towards helping immigrant workers from the Obama administration.

solis_email1It only took two months for the last member of the Obama cabinet to be sworn in, a woman and a Latina.

One of the highlights of last night was seeing Hilda Solis walk into Congress as the Secretary of Labor Solis. Yesterday she was confirmed by a vote of 80-17.

The official reason for the holdup was issues with her husband’s taxes pero really, Republicans were dragging their feet because they didn’t want a pro-immigrant and pro-worker mujer to get to work.

First thing she needs to do is whisper to her boss about what so many gente are screaming about: a huge part of the workforce in the U.S. that needs attention, undocumented immigrants.

Hilda Solis Casi Confirmed

S001153.jpgSeems like Hilda Solis’s confirmation to finally get to work as the U.S.’s Secretary of Labor is finally set to happen.

Rep. Hilda Solis edged closer Wednesday to winning confirmation as the nation’s next labor secretary, after more than a month of delays over questions about her husband’s unpaid taxes and her work for a pro-union group.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee cleared her nomination in a voice vote with only two Republicans voting against her. The action sends the nomination to the full Senate for a final vote likely this week.

3219452352_896224185b_m.jpgOn Friday I told you a little about the hold up with the Hilda Solis confirmation hearings.

Emily’s List has a petition up, directed to Senator McConnell and Senator Enzi, to move to confirm Hilda Solis as the next Secretary of Labor.

Having a worker sympathetic Secretary of Labor is critical in these economic times.

Sign the petition here.

Gracias a Ms. Sylvia for tweeting this earlier hoy.

3219452352_896224185b_m.jpgHilda Solis was one Latina Obama cabinet nomination that has many people excited because of her progressive record on labor and immigration. So why the hell are GOP Senators preventing the Labor Secretary nominee from becoming the Labor Secretary? Seems that Solis’s husband suddenly has a tax problem. Not Solis herself, but her husband.

Apparently , Sam H. Sayyad, who owns an auto supply shop, Sam’s Foreign and Domestic Auto Center, had some tax liens. Never mind that this is Solis’s marido, not Solis herself, who has nada to do with the negocio. It was reason enough for the GOP to delay the confirmation of a pro-labor, pro-immigrant cabinet choice who is likely to bring some changes to the big business bailouts so many GOP senators have made their living off of.

I hope Solis doesn’t back down.

Obama has chosen another Latino to be in his cabinet. This time it’s California Congresswoman Hilda Solis and she’s slated to be the Secretary of Labor. This hija of Nicaraguan and Mexican parents represents California’s 32nd Congressional District, which includes portions of East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley.

Progressives seem genuinely happy with this choice and looking at her campaign website, they have good reason.
