Dominican Sexuality caught on tape?

8:04 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Culture|Dominicans|sex · 4 Comments

10 Mar 2006

sexourbano.jpg I ran across a blog post talking very briefly about a documentary, produced by HBO, supposedly about the sex life of Dominicanos. The post said that it was a “montaje” (fake) and says (translation):

It’s not untrue that there is sexual frenzy in our society, but to me what is presented there seemed staged.

I watched the first part of the video, and I’m not sure what it says about Dominican sexuality (actually, I have some strong feelings about it with no relation to a culture — but I’ll keep those to myself for now), but apparently Dominican talk show host “Nuria” has a few things to say on her show tonight. We’ll stand by for her comments, but in the meantime, the Domincan Tourism secretary has something to add:

“The government’s secretary of tourism rejects the documentary presented by the American television network HBO which promotes the Dominican Republic as a sexual paradise, because the material is sensationalist and totally distorts the social and cultural reality of the Dominican people.”

I’m including a link to the video because I’d like to get our Dominicano readers’ take on what it says, if anything about your culture and your sexuality. Does it stereotype Dominican women? And to all readers: is it offensive?

Eptitafios: Not Dead Yet

8:30 am By Maegan La Mala · TV · Comments Off

5 Dec 2005

feat1_267x270_epitafios.jpg The suspense series out of Argentina, Epitafios, finished its run last week on HBO Latino but in case you missed it, HBO Signature , a channel available to most subscribers of HBO, will air the 13 part series in its entirety beginning this Wednesday, December 7, at 9 pm.

The crime drama is the first fictional dramatic series written and filmed in Latin America, by Latin Americans, for the Latin American audience by HBO Latino. The show is best described as falling somewhere between CSI and a telenovela. Personally I feel it was one of the best new shows on television this year with plenty of twists to keep me tuning in regularly. Don’t worry if you don’t speak Spanish. All episodes are subtitled in English. Check your local listings.

Epitafios: Written in Stone as Critical Hit

10:00 am By Maegan La Mala · TV · Comments Off

4 Oct 2005

epitafios.jpg" I honestly didn’t know what I was going to watch on television after the series finale of HBO’s Six Feet Under. Thank Dios for HBO Latino’s Epitafios. Epitafios is the first HBO dramatic series filmed in Spanish and in Latin America (Argentina to be specific), using Latino actors. The 13 part series was produced along with Argentino television and film production company Pol-Ka. The HBO Latino website describes the show:

Five years after a fatal hostage situation at a school left 4 students dead, the people involved with the incident are starting to turn up murdered. All clues point to someone’s master plan of killing everyone involved. Can an ex-policeman and a psychologist, both involved with the original hostage situation, stop it before it’s too late.

One of the things that attracted me to the thriller series was its rootedness in South America. There are small details in scenes that place the heart pounding (and sometimes gory) action in the Southern Hemisphere. There is the manner of speaking, mannerisms, and props in the background.

HBO Latino doesn’t want to keep anyone from enjoying the show because of language barriers so it offers repeats of the show complete with English subtitles (although the translations aren’t perfect). There is a multimedia website that is as much a rompecabezas as the show is and shouldn’t be played with if you are the type of person who hates spoilers because it revealed to me many of the plot twists. Sin embargo I can’t wait till next Monday night at 9 pm to catch the next episode.

The show is also repeated throughout the week and available on-demand for those with digital cable. Check your local listings. Epitafios is to die for.
