gloria300.jpgAccording to various news sources, Gloria Estefan’s tour through Spain beginning August 22nd, titled 90 Millas, as in the distance that separates Cuba and Florida, will be her last. The Cuban artista wants to dedicate her time to her daughter writing children’s books we would never buy our kids and getting the Castro’s out of Cuba (ok we made that last one up).

This morning, the Latin Recording Academy, that is pretty much run by the Estefans, or so feel many in the Latin music industry, announces that Gloria Estefan will be the 2008 LATIN RECORDING ACADEMY PERSON OF THE YEAR. Isn’t that kind of like rewarding yourself?

You can see the complete Latin Recording Academy press release after the jump.

gloria-estefan.jpgSpain’s 20 Minutos reports that Gloria Estefan is set to announce tomorrow a new album en español, with a focus on getting back to her Cuban music roots and reviving some Afro-Cuban rhythms:

The album 90 Millas ["90 Miles"] is “an amazing explosion of rhythm” because of the influence of the Afro-Cuban genre, which is typically recognized for its use of the backbeat.

On the topic of the song “Cuando Cuba Sea Libre” ["When Cuba is Free"], Gloria clarified that it isn’t a political song but a celebration for “when Cuba is free”.

The first promotional single, No llores, is already in the first spots on the Billboard charts.

The album, which is set to hit stores on September 18th, will be formally presented tomorrow at an event in Miami, along with a documentary which follows the making of the album and includes images of Cuba. Gloria has recruited a star-studded lineup of collaborators for this project, among them Carlos Santana, Andy Garcia, Sheila E, Cachao and India.

alma_longoria170x225.jpgDidn’t Daddy Yankee look fine? I’m not a big reggaeton fan pero he’s a papi. Jessica Alba (who is quoted as saying she doesn’t feel like a “Latin actress”) looks lovely and tiny. Pero contrast that with the subdued and makeupless Shakira accepting her award via video.

Uy looking at Andy Garcia, I realize how much that cuban reminds me of my ex, a half Cubano. I take issue with Andy’s politics pero he is an amazing actor and deserves the Anthony Quinn award. This must be the anti-Castro Cuban bloc, with Andy Garcia, Cristina Saralegui, and Gloria Estefan. Whoa – Did Gloria Estefan have plastic surgery or is it just the hairstyle that makes her look so much younger. And rounding out the bloc is Emilio Estefan.
