George Bush is a Hot Mess

12 Jan 2009

I just got finished listening to the last Bush presidential press conference ever (let the celebrations begin!), and all I can do is shake my head. What a mess that man is. One of the most telling lines in the conference was when Bush talked about how “the presidency never leaves you! You can never escape it!..(blah blah blah)..Unless you ride your mountain bike really fast trying to forget” (clearly that’s not an exact quote, but the general gist is there).

This man really hates being president. He really fucking hates it. All those people who said that Bush was a front for Cheney? Never believed it until this conference.

I tried to find a transcript of the conference online–but so far, this video clip of “Bushisms” is the only thing I can find.

It’s sort startling to me–the reporter seems think these -isms are so cute and funny–I find them more than a bit horrifying.

Maybe someday, the press will catch up with the rest of humanity and realize it’s not funny when a president talks about great job done as people drown.

Maya do a wipe down after Bush visit

29820_Bush.jpgMuch like how you would hose the garage down after Fido has an accident, some Maya activists in Guatemala said they would “perform a cleansing” after our President dirtied their sacred land with his presence during a visit yesterday, part of his Latin American tour:

Mayan leaders will spiritually “cleanse” ancient ruins in Guatemala after a visit by U.S. President George W. Bush, unpopular here because of foreign policies going back to Central America’s civil wars.

The leaders said they would hold a spiritual ceremony to restore “peace and harmony” at the Mayan ruins of Iximche after Bush tours the site on Monday.

“No, Mr. Bush, you cannot trample and degrade the memory of our ancestors,” said indigenous leader Rodolfo Pocop during a press conference. “This is not your ranch in Texas.”

Awesome. Mayan leaders quip about the Crawford ranch like the rest of us. According to Reuters, the activists we planning to “…burn incense, place flowers and water in the area where Mr. Bush has walked to clean out the bad energy.” Oh, if that were only enough.

Democrats Say Bush Budget Anti-Latino

3:00 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Education| Politics · Comments Off

16 Feb 2007

bush_red.jpgPresident Bush may have ushered in No Child Left Behind, but according to some Democrats, his budget has left and continues to leave Latinos behind.

New Jersey Democratic Senator Robert Menéndez presented a study that analyzed the impact of the national budget on programs for Latinos from 2001 on. When Bush came into office in 2001, he addressed a group of Latinos and stated that their education and health would be a priority of his administration. Menendez points to the fact that Bush eliminated literacy programs for “minority” children and higher education scholarships, both which are utilized by a large number of Latinos in the country as examples of Bush making empty promises.

Seems like Latinos have more than one reason to give Bush the finger.

xin_11120116103512277246.jpgPeople en español is reporting that Jenna Bush, the shrub’s daughter, has roped herself an argentino boyfriend. Apparently the man in question, a PR student from Buenos Aires, has been opening his mouth to local press.

“Jenna is a 10. I don’t have words to define her. She is humble, simple, and totally the opposite of a diva. Her personality captivates me…I can only say that I really enjoy being with her,” González Palazzo revealed to the magazine. According to the report, the first sparks of romance between these two came about as soon as they were introduced by a mutual Panamanian friend.

As you may recall, a few months back it was revealed that Jenna would be going “south of the border” to continue her career as a teacher. Well, it turns out that the destination was Argentina. Why am I not surprised?

According to the People en español article, Jenna’s coming back for Christmas with her argentino in tow. I wonder what W will think…

Hugo Chavez: Book publicist

12:19 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Books| Controversia| Politics| Venezuela · 1 Comment

25 Sep 2006

971p.jpgWhile American media is still reeling over Hugo Chavez’s declaration before the U.N. that George W. Bush is “the devil”, and the rest of the world struggles with the question of which camp to put the Venezuelan president in — hero or loco — celebrated author Noam Chomsky is sitting pretty. He has Chavez to thank for a recent spike in sales of his 2003 book, Hegemony or Survival: America’s Quest for Global Dominance, as the leader plugged it during his appearance at the U.N., calling the work “an excellent book to help us understand what has been happening in the world throughout the 20th century … and the greatest threat looming over our planet.”

According to AFP:

News reports said the book, published in 2003, leapt from 26,000 to number one following Chavez’s headline-making speech in which he railed against US “imperialism,” saying “the hegemonic pretensions of the American empire are placing at risk the very survival of the human species.

And according to Reuters:

By Thursday, the book had risen from backlist obscurity to be the No. 3 bestseller on Amazon.com. Before the speech, the 2004 book reprinted by Owl Books was being outsold by thousands of other titles on the online bookseller’s Web site.

According to AFP, Chomsky himself said he would be “happy to meet” Chavez and that he finds many of his views “quite constructive”.

Bush.jpg Is U.S President G.W. Bush helping push forward the Bolivarian dream and the ideal of Pan-Latino cooperation? While here in the U.S. Bush’s popularity is falling fast among Latinos thanks to his postion and the positions of his Republican buddies on immigration, our hermanos and hermanas in Latin America have a laundry list of reasons to dislike Bush and this seems to be bringing the diverse countries that make up Latin America together. And it’s not just radicals that aren’t happy with el presidente Bush.

In a recent Zogby poll, fewer than 20% of Latin American elites (typically the most politically conservative voters in the region) gave Bush a favorable approval rating. Only 6% said Bush’s policies were better than those of his predecessors.
