Speedy Gonzalez and George LopezCan I get an “ay caramba!”?
Warner Brothers, historically known for their accurate and nuanced portrayal of people of color communities, is fast tracking a Speedy Gonzales live-action/CG hybrid feature, with George Lopez as the voice of the Mexican mouse.

Speedy, who comes with a history of stereotypical portrayals of Mexico and Mexicans, is supposedly redeemed by Lopez who is reclaiming the ratoncito and trying to make a hero out of him. Is such a thing even possible? Can one of the most famous Latinos in Hollywood now take a figure who has been used to malign an entire community/country be rebranded? Should this even happen? Or does doing this take away, erase the very reason a character like Speedy was created?

“We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s — the racist Speedy,” Ann Lopez [George's wife] said with a chuckle. “Speedy’s going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at.”

George Lopez Goes Late Night

georgelopeztpAt a time when late night talk shows are in a period of transition — what some might call a renaissance — a familiar Latino face is emerging to shake up the genre even more. George Lopez is getting his own late night talk show, which is set to air on TBS and seems to be much more than just a monologue and a guy behind a desk:

Lopez and his producers approached TBS with a pilot episode filmed on an outdoor soundstage, with Eva Longoria, Dane Cook and Samuel L. Jackson as guests. Lopez sat audience members close to the stage, let them ask questions and didn’t sit behind a desk.

“The music was from salsa to Led Zeppelin,” he said. “Look, you can either go to Nieman Marcus or you can go to a flea market. When you go to a swap meet, there’s just a ground-level feel that you can find anything there. At Nieman Marcus, you’re not going to find tube socks and pliers. This will be a flea market feel.”
TBS was sold by the pilot, said Michael Wright, the cable network’s programming chief.

I’m not a huge fan of Lopez’s comedy, but I appreciate what he’s trying to do: represent some diversity in late night, so I’ll be watching. I must admit I’m also attracted by what he said he’s shooting for:

He said he wants to be inclusive, not divisive, in much the same way as Arsenio Hall’s early-1990s talk show.

I loved me some Arsenio!

Sad Macha

Today I have managed to almost, but not quite, destroy my finger. Long story short, I very cleverly managed to jam the point of my knife into finger and then yank upwards–so I have a lovely cut and some bruising. Since it hurts to type at that moment (I have to keep my hurt finger up in the air, and type with seven fingers instead of eight), I’m gonna keep it light tonight…here’s my very favorite George Lopez skit:

GeorgeLopez.jpgGeorge Lopez apparently got over feeling dissed by the Democratic front-runners and has decided to throw his weight behind Barack Obama.

Comedian and television star George Lopez will be appearing today in El Paso on behalf of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.

Hillary has Ugly Betty in her camp (how many times can you spot her in this video?).

George Lopez Feels Dissed by the Dems

GeorgeLopez.jpgComedian George Lopez feels dissed by the two Democrat presidential front runners, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Said Lopez to Dune magazine, “Barack Obama didn’t reach out. Hillary Clinton didn’t reach out. “You’d think that the fact that you sell a lot of concert tickets, you’re on the Forbes (magazine) list and you’re the ninth most-visible person on TV would equate to having a presidential candidate reach out and have you campaign for them, especially in (heavy Latino areas) the Southwest (of America) or Los Angeles.”

Well now I don’t feel so bad. George they’re not really reaching out to Latino bloggers either.
