Another%20UCC%20minister%20for%20equal%20marriage.jpgWhen ads for the United Church of Christ first appeared on some mainstream cable television stations, people were shocked. Shocked because a church was advertising a positive message of love and understanding, instead of the general line of judgement and condemnation. The UCC’s ad creative spoke of a ministry of love and acceptance, with a particular emphasis on the acceptance of gay people into the fold of Christianity.

The message — as well as the UCC’s endorsement of gay marriage — viewed as refreshing by some, is reviled by the Christian Right (called “radical”) and apparently by Spanish language television in this country:

The UCC reported this week that the Spanish version of its 30-second commercial, “Ejector,” was turned down last Thursday by NBC Universal, a family of broadcast and cable networks that includes Telemundo. A separate company, Univision – which also owns the Telefutura and Galavision networks – similarly rejected the denomination’s ad on the same day.

Alejandro Fernández: a “real man”

4:41 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|GLBT|Music · 2 Comments

28 Feb 2006

P56567C7ACY.jpgDon’t go calling him gay. Apparently “El Potrillo” Alejandro Fernández has been the target of criticism and speculation lately regarding his sexual orientation because he and his father engage in kisses on the mouth as a show of affection. Alejandro counters:

“Esta es una costumbre familiar y no nos interesan las críticas. Yo a mis hijos también los beso en la boca, tal y como me lo enseñó mi padre, y eso no significa nada sobre nuestras tendencias sexuales, por el contrario, somos muy hombrecitos“, expresó el artista en rueda de prensa.

It’s pretty lame that he’s basically saying he’s a “real man” as opposed to a “gay man”, who aren’t considered “hombres”. Lame because I liked him and thought he’d be beyond the typical of Mexican machismo BS of gay men are “locas”. I guess guys who kiss their dad on the mouth…we’ll, they’re just chest-beating machos who can do that.

As for the speculation, how ridiculous is it to think that a man is gay because he kisses his dad? I mean do gay men make out with their fathers? Ugh.

5:45 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Activism|GLBT|society|Spain · Comments Off

21 Feb 2006

1140527245_extras_ladillos_1_0.jpgAmnesty International wants to draw the attention of Spanish citizens to the consequences faced by gays and lesbians in less-tolerant parts of the world. The result is a campaign featuring Spain’s most prominent gay celebs with their faces mangled and bloodied as if from the violent blows of an anti-gay hate crime.

La campaña de publicidad, lanzada en Internet y prensa, utiliza la cara de estos artistas españoles para mostrar las “terribles consecuencias” de ser homosexual en algunos países del mundo. “Las imágenes son muy impactantes y llegan a la gente.

Ricky en boykini with a boy

6:47 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|Entertainment|GLBT · 5 Comments

1 Feb 2006

ricky-martin-beach1.jpgUrban legend or gay love story? Univision.com is really going out on a limb today. They are insinuating in a headline (“Un Rickísimo descanso
Ricky Martín vacaciona con un chico”
) that Ricky Martin may be — gasp — gay! The site is featuring some rather old photos that have been floating around the internet for the past couple of weeks in which Ricky seems to be having a ball with another (very hot) man.

¡Mal pensados!

Gay Latino Fashion?

5:17 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Fashion|GLBT|Internet · 1 Comment

9 Dec 2005

Mono3.jpgI came across this by chance as a result of a Google AdSense ad for the keyword “Latino”. MarcaEres, which looks to me to be a pretty small company, got my attention because I don’t think anyone else in the U.S. (I’m assuming they are in the U.S. as the site is in English) is doing t-shirts and accessories for the gay Latino market.

It makes sense. Here in San Francisco, in the Castro District, you see lots of t-shirts with gay themes and clever comments on them (granted, only gay tourists buy and wear these), but I’ve never seen one in Spanish.

Study: Latino gay couples more hurt by marriage ban

2:01 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · GLBT|Politics · Comments Off

9 Nov 2005

gay marriage 2004.jpgIn light of the gay marriage amendment’s passing in Texas, it’s interesting to look at statistics on how the marriage ban affects Latino gay and lesbian couples. A new study from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force does just that:

The policy implications vary according to the findings. According to Cianciotto, the analysis of the income data revealed that Hispanic same-sex couples may be even more affected by the inability to marry than comparable white non-Hispanic couples because of several factors—including the facts that they earn less, are less likely to own a home and are even more likely to report a disability. The report stated that access to the marriage’s “1,138 federal protections and benefits” would certainly help Hispanic couples buy homes and provide for their children.

E-Loan allegedly racist and homophobic

1:40 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · California|GLBT|society · 1 Comment

20 Oct 2005

ultima280foto.jpgThe San Francisco Bay Area is probably the last place one would think of when qualifying traditionally racist or homophobic regions. But according to some employees, E-Loan, a well-known lending company based here in the Bay is not living up to that reputation of acceptance and plurality. In fact, just the opposite. Employees are suing for harrassment on the basis of sexual orientation, gender and race:

According to the complaint, filed by attorneys at Kerr and Wagstaffe, Jonni Guelde, a supervisor in the underwriting department of E-Loan, regularly made offensive slurs against African American, Latino, and LGBT employees. The complaint also says Guelde bragged about how, at a prior job, she ridiculed a transgender employee to the point that the employee eventually committed suicide.

While some of the complaints have stated that management made derogatory comments towards Latino employees, the BAR newspaper quotes the plaintiffs’ attorney as saying:

“The irony is that it’s a Latino-based company. They’re really well-known as an employer-friendly company,” Labar said.

Apparently E-Loan recently merged with a Puerto Rican financial services company, Popular Inc.

This doesn’t make them a “Latino-based company” and even if it were managed by a Latino executive team, why would that even matter? Racism and homophobia exist in the Latino community as much as they do in any other. To imply that a Latino business would be inequivocally above this type of behavior is to simplify the matter. What’s shocking to me is that in this day and age (and in this part of the country) employers still believe that they can get away with creating a hostile work environment for employees. If these allegations are found to be true, E-Loan, a publicly-traded company, will pay big for their misdeeds. Sometimes that’s the only way people learn.

GLAAD honors gay-friendly Spanish-language media

10:04 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · TV · Comments Off

27 Sep 2005

Non-profit organization GLAAD has had a tough time getting their heads and hands around the anti-gay presence on many television shows on Spanish-language TV in the years since it launched its People of Color Media Program. They’ve made a lot of headway, though, getting corporate giants like Pizza Hut to pull ads aired on Univision during a show known to antagonize and stereotype gay people. GLAAD’s Media Awards, a start-studded three-city event boasting stars like Robin Williams, Tippi Hedren, etc. makes a big splash each year, and now they are taking the show to Miami, to honor the “good guys” in Spanish-language media. According to a press release, Univision’s Jorge Ramos will present TV’s Cristina Saralegui with the “Premio Valentía”.

Valentía is right. I think it’s pretty valiente for Cristina to publicly support the gay community knowing that a significant number of her viewers do not.

The event is presented by GLAAD’s long-time sponsor Absolut Vodka, along with new sponsor Coors Light.
