Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal continues to do good work both on the screen and off. His latest good work is being recognized on May 23 by the Latino Commission on AIDS. Bernal will receive the ILKA award and named as the International Ambassador for the Latino Commission on AIDS 2007 at the annual Cielo Latino benefit to be held at Cipriani Wall Street. Bernal is quoted as saying:
Each person has to fight their own battle to get rid of the silence on our own families. This is a problem that goes way beyond just our families and a problem that every day has more to do with entire nations, populations, and huge numbers of individuals who suffer with this illness. My participation in dealing with this problem is going to be more active to help eradicate the silenceon a much more universal level.

There’s gonna be a swoon fest throughout some Mexican states as talented hotties Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna showcase documentary films. The tour, titled Ambulante 2007, was started by the dynamic duo last year and received critical acclaim for bringing documentaries into commercial theaters.

I don’t need too many reasons to love Gael Garcia Bernal. He’s hot. He’s talented and we’ve written about his good politics here before. But just in case you need another reason to love the Mexican actor. Here’s one: he’s GLBT friendly! That’s right, Gael publically put his weight behind Mexico City’s brand spanking new gay civil union law.
Garcia Bernal, actor Diego Luna and director Alfonso Cuaron were among 51 people who published a half-page open letter in local newspapers supporting the law passed this month by local lawmakers.“The vote for the civil-unions law was a vote in favor of liberty, social equality and the strength of civil society,” the artists wrote.

It looks like our very own Mamita Mala might be crying in her soup tonight as it seems that there is evidence to support the rumor that Mexican heartthrob Gael Garcia Bernal and actress Natalie Portman are getting back together. While Mala originally (sadly) reported that Gael was about to walk down the aisle with Argentine actress Dolores Fonzi, People en Español is reporting that
…something changed, as Portman decided to travel to Argentina where Gael will be shooting El pasado. However, the visit hasn’t been problem-free, as the couple has been constantly harrassed by the press. According to Mexican daily Reforma, on Monday the couple had a fight as a result of the fact that when Gael attempted to leave his hotel to meet up woth Portman, a group of reporters and papaparazzi headed him off, causing him to go back in and her to leave the hotel “with tears in her eyes”.
More drama than tango lyrics. How very Argentine.

If the rumores coming out of Argentina are true, then I am heartbroken. According to QuePasa Mexican actor (and hottie) Gael Garcia Bernal could be planning to walk down the aisle with Argentina’s Dolores Fonzi.
Garcia Bernal and Fonzi met in 2001 when he arrived in Buenos Aires to shoot “Vidas privadas”, first work of Argentinian singer Fito Paez. Last year, the star of “Y Tu Mama Tambien” was a guest star of the TV series “Soy tu fan”, starring Fonzi, and in which both of them lived a romance that seemed to have gone a little further than screen performances.
Well if the rumores are true don’t expect me to be throwing rice at the nuptuals. You’ll find me pouting along with Natalie Portman, Gael’s ex who interestingly enough happens to be in Argentina as well.

If Gael Garcia Bernal is going to be in Buenos Aires in July then that’s where I wanna be too. People in Espanol is reporting that the Mexican actor will be returning to Argentina, where he filmed The Motorcycle Diaries, to film a movie titled El pasado, based on a novel by Alan Pauls and directed by Héctor Barbenco. It hasn’t been decided what lucky mujer will play opposite Gael in this film. According to producer Óscar Kramer:
Todas quieren actuar con Gael, es un imán. Pero es un papel muy complejo y hay que saber elegir bien.
Of course everyone wants to play opposite Gael. He’s talented and sexy. I wonder if there’s any chance they would consider a Nuyorican with no acting experience?

If there is one thing Mala loves its a talented, smart, poltical Latino and Gael Garcia Bernal is on the top of my love/lust list. The 27 year old Mexican actor graces the cover of the Spring/Summer issue of Another Man magazine. Inside the magazine Gael talks about going against the grain of what many Latino actors are doing, purposely avoiding Hollywood. Taking that road less travelled hasn’t hurt him one bit. Gael says:
A film with no point of view is such a waste of money. So much money is spent on films. Oh man, spend that money somewhere else!
I will happily spend money to grab up this magazine and also cheerfully drop a ten dollar bill to see Gael on screen.

Mexican actor Gael García Bernal is branching out. In December, Mala reported that in addition to his acting, Gael was a spokesperson for the international humanitarian organization Oxfam. Now it seems that the muli-faceted Gael will show yet another of his faces — that of director:
Mexican actor García Bernal will begin shooting this week on his first film as a director, in which he will also act as protagonist.
The project was born a few months back as a made for TV movie , but with time Gael managed to get financing to turn it into a feature film.
…The film is about a group of young people, children of rich parents, who think they know everything and have everything, but who after a journey discover they have nothing.
Sounds intriguing, and a break from typical Mexican film plots of late. Best of luck, Gael!

Gael Garcia Bernal is much more than a pretty face and a talented actor, he is using his fame to speak out about causes that he cares about and feels strongly about. Today in Hong Kong, Garcia Bernal joined on a fair trade campaign run by the humanitarian aid organization Oxfam. Specifically the 27 year old actor spoke about the negative impact genetically modified corn exported from the U.S. under NAFTA was having on the agricultural economies of countries like his own native Mexico.
