El futbol, or soccer, as lamentable it is known here in the U.S. is a super macho realm, no matter if it’s actually being played or watched. Men gather together, sweat, swear, cheer, drink. It’s male bonding at its best/worst. So who would think that there would be a gay World Cup and Argentina of all places? Well it’s true. Represented are over 500 players from 28 nations from various continents. This year marks the first time that the gay World Cup is held in Latin America.
The slogan of the Mexican team perhaps best sums up the spirit of the gay football world cup – “the ball is round for everyone”.
Right on!!!

Mexico wants to host what is arguably the biggest sporting event in the world — the FIFA World Cup of Soccer — in 2018.
While that sounds like it’s a ways off, Mexico is already preparing its bid for the tournament, and head of the Mexican Football Federation, Justino Compeán, made his case this week in the city of Puebla. Compeán says that Mexico is prepared to host the games, which have also taken place in his country twice before, in 1970 and 1986.
If this happens, will I be too old by that time to cover the event for VL? Yeah…

The words “savage attack” seldom come up in the context of a story about arrests made by Canadian police. But those are the words used to describe what happened at the end of the Argentina-Chile match of the World Cup U-20, after two Chilean players were expelled and Argentina went on to win the match 3-0. Spain’s 20 Minutos reports that a Chilean journalist witnessed the arrest and gave this account:
“We don’t know exactly where the police’s attitude came from but from where were, about 50 meters away, we could see how the police savagely attacked the players,”said [a reporter] in a telephone dispatch from Toronto.
According to reports corroborated by more than one journalist, the players were handcuffed and reporters were restricted from filming what was going down.
Apparently things got worse when the arrested team members, who were detained in a paddywagon, attempted to escape from the vehicle through windows when police activated a tear gas bomb inside. Watch a video account from Chilean television after the jump.

Peru may have kicked Uruguay’s culo (3-0) and political pals but futbol rivals Venezuela and Bolivia tied (2-2), the most entertaining portion of the Copa América yesterday was the lovefest between the three amigos, Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez, Bolivia’s President Evo Morales, and fresh out of rehab (again) Diego Maradona. All three took turns kicking the ball around (Evo has a mean kick).
Today, Brazil vs. Mexico and Chile vs. Ecuador.
Go Chile!!! (my kids are half Chilenas- ok?)

Today marks the beginning of the 42nd edition of the Copa América, the main international football tournament for South America. Latinos are buzzing with excitement, making long lunch plans and coming home late to watch the action. The event is organized by CONMEBOL, South America’s football governing body. For the first time in the tournament’s history Venezuela is hosting the games between June 26 and July 15, 2007. The opening game today is Uruguay vs. Peru followed by Venezuela vs. Bolivia in San Cristobal. Because the tournament is being held in Venezuela, the U.S. State Department felt the need to warn travelers.

21 Mar 2007…at soccer, that is, on a new Microsoft XBox game. The Mexican futbolista, currently playing for Barcelona, beat supernerd Bill Gates (looking particularly dorky in this picture) 2-1 at an event to promote XBox.

Bill Gates was in Cartagena, Colombia earlier this week highlighting his company’s work to help Latin America become more competitive, as well as his partnership with the Ricky Martin Foundation.

Last night I was ready with my Mexican beer and food to watch the Mexican national futbol team, under soccer legend (and big mouth)Hugo Sánchez, kick the U.S. team’s behind. Well, that’s not quite how it went down (thankfully I didn’t put money on the game). The U.S. team beat Mexico , 2-0, thanks to Bobby Conrad and Landon Donovan. The game was played to a sold out crowd in the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

David Beckham: the one soccer player that people who know nothing about soccer can identify. His model good looks and requisite skanky wife have made him more like a Hollywood star than a sports star, and perhaps that’s why his new bazillion-dollar gig is for L.A.’s futbol team, the Galaxy.
While we know that soccer isn’t the biggest sport in mainstream America — far from it — is still much appreciated by Latinos in this country, who shell out big bucks to see Mexican and other Latin American and Spanish teams play stateside. AP reports today on how Latino fans in L.A. are reacting to the multi-million dollar player’s export from Madrid to Los Angeles:
