29 Jun 2009Did people really think that the USA would repeat what it had done with Spain?
Yesterday the US’s soccer team faced Brazil in the FIFA Confederations Cup Final in Johannesburg, South Africa. The US was ahead, 2-0, after the first half pero, I predicted that Brazil was going to come through in the second half and win.
Yup, I was right. Brazil not only tied the game in the second, pero won 3-2.

24 Jun 2009I’m not a huge sports fan, but I can get into futbol. One thing I always get from my soccer fan friends from Latin America and Spain is what a joke the U.S. team is. But what you expect from a country who thinks soccer is for sissies and only knows David Beckham for his modeling gigs. Sheesh.
So what was my surprise when I saw that the number one trending topic on Twitter was the word “Spain” and found that the world was tweeting this astonishing outcome in the FIFA Confederations Cup semifinals today: the U.S. mopped up the floor with Spain in a 2-0 win. For those of you who don’t know, Spain is the number one team in the world, and boasts some of the sport’s most talented athletes.
Spain went into this game with the confidence of the jock who always clobbers the wimpy kid and got clobbered themselves. But this isn’t just shocking to me; this is world soccer history: the U.S. today became the first team to beat Spain since 2006 and some experts are calling the victory the best performance since they defeated England 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.
Might this help get some momentum moving in making soccer a more popular sport in the U.S.? I doubt it. I mean, how many of you had ever heard of the Confederations Cup before this? How many even care to know what it is? Yeah, I thought so. But it would be nice though!
In the end, Spain loses more than just a game (and their chance at the finals for this tournament): they lose face. As you might expect, Spain is devastated and fans are blaming the loss on the cockiness and overconfidence of their (nearly) invincible team.

Last year Kaka won the award and yes his name still makes me laugh as if I were a 13 year old.

29 Jun 2008What no one thought was possible has happened. Spain is the European champion for fútbol, defeating Germany 1-0 in a stressful but beautiful match. Here’s the goal that won the match, landed in the first half of the game
Most people didn’t believe that Spain would even make it to the quarter finals, much less defeat a team as strong as Germany. The last time Spain won the Eurocup was 44 years ago, and after the game President Zapatero commented that he is the first Spanish president to see a Eurocup win in a democratic Spain.

The blog, Stuff White People Like, is controversial because of its’ broad definition of whiteness (which I’ve gotten spanked for as well and will not get into here again although I’m sure a commenter will spur me to), but sometimes its spot on and makes me laugh out loud. This morning the focus is on white people pretend to love futbol for the fashion of it without really knowing much about the actual sport.
In fact, the main reason white people like soccer is so they can buy a new scarf. As you may or may not know, many soccer teams issue special scarves, and white people cannot get enough of them!
Most white people choose a favorite soccer team based on either a study abroad experience or a particularly long vacation to Europe or South America. When they return, they like to tell their friends about how great “football” is and that they are committed to ‘getting more into’ now that they have returned home.

Having a Golden Ball isn’t enough for Brazilian futbol star Kaka. The 25 year old AC Milan player was named FIFA’s world player of the year. This makes him the 5th Brazilian winner since soccer’s governing body introduced the award in 1991.`
`It’s really special for me, it was a dream for me just to play for Sao Paulo and one game for the national team,” Kaka, a devout Christian, said after receiving the award. “But the Bible says that God can give you more than you even ask for, and that has happened in my life.”

Soccer matches are frequently the scene of violent brawls, dangerous stampedes and knock-down, drag-out battles between warring fans. Argentina is looking to avoid these incidents during its soccer games by employing a high-tech way of filtering out troublemakers:
The system, which will go into effect at the beginning of 2009, will be based on biometrics, which allows recognition of individuals based on their physical characteristics, and the principal element will be fingerprints. The first step will be to create a registration system for fans in which everyone who wants to enter stadiums will have to sign up, including concession vendors, soccer team employees, journalists and even police. Personal and professional information will have to be given, as well as a photo, a signature and a fingerprint.

I’m not trying to insult the Mexican Football Federation. They are taking part of a breast cancer awareness campaign called You Will Love Football Like Never Before.
The 10th to 14th rounds of Mexico’s Opening Tournament will be played with a pink ball instead of the normal white one, to raise awareness that women must explore their breasts in order to detect cancer in its early, treatable stages.
The players will also wear a pink ribbon, the international symbol for awareness of breast cancer, which is the second largest killer of Mexican women accounting for a death every two hours and 20 minutes. The teams will also carry banners reading “Join the fight against breast cancer. The ball is in your court. Explore yourself”.

El futbol, or soccer, as lamentable it is known here in the U.S. is a super macho realm, no matter if it’s actually being played or watched. Men gather together, sweat, swear, cheer, drink. It’s male bonding at its best/worst. So who would think that there would be a gay World Cup and Argentina of all places? Well it’s true. Represented are over 500 players from 28 nations from various continents. This year marks the first time that the gay World Cup is held in Latin America.
The slogan of the Mexican team perhaps best sums up the spirit of the gay football world cup – “the ball is round for everyone”.
Right on!!!

Mexico wants to host what is arguably the biggest sporting event in the world — the FIFA World Cup of Soccer — in 2018.
While that sounds like it’s a ways off, Mexico is already preparing its bid for the tournament, and head of the Mexican Football Federation, Justino Compeán, made his case this week in the city of Puebla. Compeán says that Mexico is prepared to host the games, which have also taken place in his country twice before, in 1970 and 1986.
If this happens, will I be too old by that time to cover the event for VL? Yeah…
