Two years ago The Food Network decided to try its luck with actually putting Latino people on the air to cook Latino cuisines, with Simply Delicioso being the first show on the network to be hosted by a Latina. It must have gone well, since none other than Food Network’s sacred cow, Rachael EVOO Ray has decided to put her money where Latino food is and produce a Latino-themed cooking show for the network:

Ray is producing a new show for the network starring actress and cookbook author Daisy Martinez. The weekly “Viva Daisy!” premiered Saturday for a six-week run. The show is the network’s second focused on Latino foods, joining Ingrid Hoffman’s “Simply Delicioso.”

Martinez previously hosted public television’s Hispanic foods-focused “Daisy Cooks.” The new show will be the first from Ray’s production company, Watch Entertainment, that doesn’t feature Ray.

The collaboration began after Ray and Martinez bonded while participating in a panel discussion together. Ray says she knew immediately she wanted to give Martinez a bigger platform from which to talk about Latino foods.

You can get a taste of Daisy on the video above.

What do you think? Will a Latina face make you watch more Food Network?

NEW%20cincodemayo_5x7_back.jpgEver since VL started way back when, Jennifer and I have been complaining about Cinco de Mayo being misunderstood and misused as an excuse for half price margaritas.

But this year seems to be especially special because my inbox has been flooded with Cinco de Mayo marketing tie-ins way beyond your normal Mexican hat dance drinking games.

Food Network to put Latina on the air

5769_1_lr.jpgI confess, I sometimes watch the Food Network. And with the exception of very few shows (one of which has been cancelled), I consider it trash. The kind of trash you want to watch again and again, and at various times of the day, religiously. In watching a whole lot of the Food Network, I noticed that there are very few people of color on the channel, and the few that are there are relegated to the deadly early morning or late night hours. Up until now — and in spite of the fact that Latin America boasts some of the most diverse and awe-inspiring cuisines in the world — there was no Latino representation on the Food Network, but that’s history now:

Ingrid Hoffmann has been tempting Spanish-language audiences by cooking traditional food with a modern twist and offering common-sense tips for entertaining. Now she wants to translate that recipe into English.

With her new show “Simply Delicioso,” airing Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. beginning July 14, the Colombian-born Miami resident becomes the Food Network’s first Latina host. Already known to Spanish TV watchers through her cable show Delicioso on Galavision and segments on Univision’s Despierta America, Hoffman will join the ranks of other Spanish-language stars who have tried to cross over to English – not always successfully.

Indeed, not always successfully.

Check out a video of the new food diva here and tell us what you think. Does she stand a fighting chance on the Food Network?

Food TV Reality: Latina Eliminada

foodnetwork.jpgTo the horror of some of my friends, I am a Food Network addict. So, it comes as no surprise to them that I am also addicted to their Survivor-like reality show which pits would-be chefs against each other for a spot as the newest Rachael Ray protégé.

The show, as nail-bitingly entertaining as it is insufferable (like all reality TV) is comprised of a variopinto line-up of contestants. Okay, so maybe not so varied: you basically got one black guy and one Latina — a Puerto Rican named Evette — and bunch of white people. Oh, and an Asian girl, but they told her buh-bye in the very first round.

So once upon a time there was an aspiring TV chef named Evette, a Rican working mother from Florida, vying for a place for her traditional “Latino” cooking style among a more mainstream contestants.
