Castro Claims : I Saved Reagan So I Can’t Be that Bad

9:10 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|Politics · Comments Off

13 Sep 2007

reagan.jpgFidel Castro just keeps on penning words that seem written just to piss people off in the United States. His latest target : dead prez Ronald Reagan. In an essay published Wednesday in the newspaper Granma Castro claims:

…that a Cuban security official stationed at the United Nations told the then U.S. mission security chief about an extreme right-wing group that was planning to kill Reagan during a trip to North Carolina. “The information was complete: the names of those implicated in the plan; day, time and hour where the assassination could occur; the type of weapon the terrorists had and where they kept their arms; and along with all that, the meeting place of those elements planning the action as well as a brief summary of what had occurred in said meeting.”

Fidel Castro may be out of the public eye but he sure perking up ears with his ill timed comments about September 11, 2001 conspiracy theories.

In an essay read by a Cuban television presenter Tuesday night, Castro said the Pentagon was hit by a rocket, not a plane, because no traces were found of its passengers.”Today one knows there was deliberate misinformation,”"Studying the impact of planes, similar to those that hit the Twin Towers, that had accidentally fallen on densely populated cities, one concludes that it was not a plane that crashed into the Pentagon,” Castro said.”Only a projectile could have caused the geometrically round hole that allegedly was made by the plane,” he said.”We were fooled like the rest of the planet’s inhabitants,” he wrote.

I know there are many out there who actually believe this theory but for a head of state to say it and on the anniversary? Just not nice.

fidel.jpgPeople, especially those in the Cuban exile community were waiting with baited breath for the official announcement, the one they’ve been waiting for at least a year, the one announcing that Fidel Castro is dead. But that announcement never came (at least not as I’m writing this on Saturday morning).

This Friday, teary callers told Ninoska Pérez of Radio Mambí they were sure this was it, and Pérez, as usual, reminded, ….The moment will come, but this is not the moment.”

At Aaction Home Health in Hialeah, office workers were abuzz because somebody from Cuba called a colleague to say folks in Havana were starting to take to the streets in anticipation of the news. At the University of Miami, media relations officers worked the phones in search of confirmation.

A Year Without Fidel (Well Not Really)

9:57 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|Politics · Comments Off

31 Jul 2007

fidel.jpgIt’s been a year since an ailing Fidel Castro handed day to day Cuban ruling power to his lil hermanito, Raul. The Cuban exile community partied in the streets thinking el barbudo to be dead or near dead and the U.S. made plans on what to do with a post-Fidel Cuba. But the parties and speculation didn’t last long as Fidel recovered from a still mysterious intestinal operation (yes yes we know commenter- you think its Crohn’s) Fidel has been representing more than ever, even if not publicaly.

11:47 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|Politics · Comments Off

26 Jul 2007

070116_castro_vlrg_330a.widec.jpgIn spite of his prolific writing and recent reports that he’s on the mend, Cuban president Fidel Castro once again missed one of his nation’s most important events. Revelers at the celebration commemorating the July 26th assault on the Moncada barracks in 1953 was instead led by the other Castro, brother Raul.

The expectations of a public reappearance by the Cuban leader had ostensibly lessened the night before, when press officially announced that it would be Raul Castro who would lead give the keynote speech for event, which is the island’s main revolutionary event.

Venezuela’s El Universal reports that it was precisely one year before when Fidel made his last public appearance at the very same event, and had surgery the next day.

fidel.jpgSherry Sullivan , a woman in Maine has filed a lawsuit against Cuban President Fidel Castro, alleging that the Cuban leader caused the wrongful death of her pilot father after he was shot down over Cuba and imprisoned in 1963 while on a covert mission. The lawsuit was originally filed back in May but the case was delayed until last week because of considerations on ow to serve papers to Castro, his brother Raul, the Cuban army, and the Republic of Cuba, all who are also named in the suit. A certified Spanish translation of the suit was delivered to Cuba by registered mail, although no proof of its delivery to the parties named has been received.

After four months, Castro’s back

12:07 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|Politics · Comments Off

4 Jun 2007

cubaviet5-g.jpgCuban leader Fidel Castro reappeared over the weekend, in his first appearance on Cuban television in four months. Ten months after giving over power to his brother Raul, Castro is back and acting as if that never happened, as he signed an oil agreement with Vietnamese Communist Party leader Nong Duc Manh.

Does this mean Castro is back in the driver’s seat? I don’t know, but what I do know is that if I were Chavez, that photo would make me jealous.

1:05 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba · Comments Off

2 May 2007

fidel.jpgDespite predictions that Cuban leader Fidel Castro would make a comeback at yesterday’s May Day rally in la Habana, he remained missing in action. Marchers were disappointed that behind the podium at Revolution Square were Raul Castro and Ricardo Alarcon, the president of the National Assembly.

It has been 9 months since Fidel has been seen publicly and speculation has been growing as to the actual health condition of the Communist leader.

Don’t Call It A Comeback : Is Fidel Ready for his Closeup?

2:12 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Bolivia|Cuba|Politics|Venezuela · Comments Off

29 Apr 2007

evo%20fidel%20hugo.jpgTwo of Fidel Castro‘s buddies are hinting that the Cuban leader, who has been out of the spotlight since having surgery last summer, is ready to retake his position as President. His little bro, Raul Castro, has been taking care of business since Fidel’s gastrointestinal operation last July. Bolivian President, Evo Morales, was the first to speculate, saying that he fully expected Fidel to be present at Havana’s May Day parade on Tuesday. Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez didn’t say when his amigo would make a public appearance, but he would say the Fidel Castro was back in charge.

As usual, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Castro lashes out against Bush and Lula deal

1:28 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|Politics · Comments Off

4 Apr 2007

fidel12-3.jpgTo all who say Fidel Castro is history, recent developments in his level of activity — including walks with Garcia Marquez and long phone calls with his friend Huguito — prove otherwise. Today Castro published his second article this week in Cuba’s Granma criticizing Bush and Brazilian president Lula’s ethanol plan, apparently motivated by Lula’s visit to Camp David (read the transcript).

“At Camp David Bush declared his intention to apply this formula on a global level, which amounts to nothing less than the internalization of genocide.”
