29 Nov 2006Good God, what’s going on in Mexico? Looks like Mexico’s congressional tribunal was the scene of an knock-down, drag-out brawl as leftist politicians attempted to impede conservative President-elect Felipe Calderon’s inauguration. Pictures are worth a thousand words in this case.
Felipe Calderon’s inauguration as President of Mexico went through a grotesque event when “diputados” from the left and the right went to blows with each other in the congressional tribunal where the swearing in was going to take palce. The leftists’ objective was to impede the inauguration ceremony of Calderon. However, members of the PAN, Calderon’s party, blocked them with pushing and screaming, and finally both groups remained in the room, swearing that neither will leave.
This just makes me sad. I won’t pretend to be objective. I am angered at the fact that the Mexican left can’t catch a break because corruption is built into the system. And, I can identify with those who were so pissed they wanted to do something at the last minute (harken back to our own “democratic” elections), but unfortunately, after months of protest and other acts of civil disobedience, it may be time to call it quits.

Mexican President-elect Felipe Calderón today called the extension of the border wall proposed by the U.S. government “a serious mistake”.
The comments were made in a press conference during a visit with the Canadian Prime Minister in which, according to Mexican daily El Universal he compared the building of the border wall with that of the Berlin Wall.
Calderón also called the decision on the part of the U.S. to continue with the project “deplorable” and claimed that “it won’t resolve anything”.
Meanwhile, Mexican president Vicente Fox is calling the wall “useless and shameful”, and went on to say:
“I think this is shameful for the U.S. and proof of its inability to see the immigration issue as one of mutual responsibility.”

The “official” Mexican President-elect, Felipe Calderon, weighed in yesterday on plans to add additional fencing/walls along the border between Mexico and the United States.
We are worried … about the actions that the United States is discussing concerning building a border wall and tightening restrictions on migrants.
Calderon made the statement afer a meeting with his country’s foreign secretary. Calderon is not convinced that the placement of additional physical barriers will lessen the amount of traffic through the border. United States Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist set up a possible vote late this week on a proposal to erect fencing along a third of the U.S.-Mexican border.
Sounds like more band aids instead of real aid.

In its final ruling, Mexico’s electoral court (TEPJF) did acknowledge that there was illegal campaign interference by President Vicente Fox and from the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial (CCE) in favor the governing National Action Party (PAN) candidate Felipe Calderón and against rival Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).
They further recognized that the attack ads used against López Obrador were illegal, however, they pointed out that the AMLO had used the same tactics. Nevertheless, in the end, the seven-judge panel firmly stated that none of the irregularities was significant enough to have significantly altered the outcome of the election.
The unappealable ruling handed down by the electoral court, which in its 10 years of existence has never been accused of bias, details each of the irregularities that were found, but says that their impact was not strong enough to justify annulling the elections.
Under Mexican law, an election can only be annulled if widespread fraud can be “objectively proven.”
Andrés Manuel López Obrador and those that support him want one thing, a recount. This past weekend hundreds of thousands of people, more than the rally last week, gathered in the center of Mexico City, in the Zócalo, to demand an official vote by vote recount of the ballots from the Mexican presidential election. Some reports put the crowd , that contained people who came from as far north as Mexico’s border with the United States and as far south as the state of Chiapas, at over 200,000. While the election results have yet to be declared official by the Federal Electoral Tribunal, Felipe Calderón was declared the winner by less than 1 percent.

I was certain that when I woke up this morning the Mexican presidential election would have finally been decided, and depending on what media outlets you read, it has been! Confused? So are we. Sources such as The New York Times and Reuters are reporting ALMO’s lead over Calderón as Jennifer reported yesterday. CNN is reporting the opposite, stating that early this morning Felipe Calderón has taken the lead over Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Univision has gone so far as to declare Calderón the winner.
With the final results of the Mexican presidential election expected as early as tomorrow or as late as the weekend, depending on which news source you read, the leftist Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) and their candidate, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, are prepping for the worse by not backing down. As votes continue to be counted and as the gap between Lopez Obrador and Felipe Calderon lessens (with Calderon leading according to sources), an article posted today on AlterNet states:
Lopez Obrador has said he will honor the results of a fair election, even if he loses by one vote. But if history is any lesson, Lopez Obrador is no Al Gore. He won’t walk away from a stolen election without a protest. His political rise has been characterized by having to respond to dirty tricks. And if anyone is justified in being a “firebrand” about stolen elections, it is Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
