ALeqM5huzXJDnCxsnAn_tvWlnOPc7A26Uw.jpgThe FARC has released two hostages, Clara Rojas and Consuelo Gonzalez, who were later picked up by helicopters in the Colombian jungle and brought back to Caracas. Above is one of the first pictures of the freed hostages, distributed by AFP, who captured the images from Venezuelan television.

Venezuela’s El Universal reports that U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey was quoted as saying that he “celebrates” the freeing of the hostages, but made no mention of Hugo Chavez’s involvement in the process. However, Casey did thank Colombian president Alvaro Uribe.

That is NOT going to go over well at Miraflores.

As much as I dislike the Uribe government, you really can’t blame them. They are trying to save face and appear in control of a situation that is really out of control. They weren’t able to negotiate any hostage release either, and ruse or not, Venezuela seemed to get farther than Colombia ever had.

Liars, Liars : FARCS Pants on Fire

rojas.jpgIt seems that the world is closer to figuring out who is the liar in the whole FARC/ Nene Emmanuel fiasco. On Saturday, the FARC admitted that the three year old boy being held by Colombian authorities in Bogota, the capital, is the same boy, known as Emmanuel, that was part of the failed hostage release deal set to take place at the end of December of last year (really just a week ago).

DNA tests indicated a complete match between mitochondria in the blood of the boy – who has been given the name Juan David Gomez – and Ms Rojas’ mother, Attorney General Mario Iguaran said, quoted by the Associated Press news agency.

The Saga of Emmanuel Continues in Colombia

IMAGEN-3881346-1.jpgThe center of the drama surrounding FARC hostages has moved from Hugo Chavez and Ingrid Betancourt to a little boy known as Emmanuel. The Colombian government is saying that the FARC canceled a scheduled release of three hostages earlier this week, because they don’t have one of the promised hostages, Emmanuel. Emmanuel is the approximately 4 year old son of another hostage that was to be released, Clara Rojas. Rojas, who used to work with Ingrid Betancourt, had the boy while in FARC custody, presumably with one of her captors. Interestingly enough, little about this angle has been covered, especially the glaring possibility that Rojas was raped.

No FARC Hostages Home for the New Year

7:24 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Colombia|Politics|Venezuela · Comments Off

2 Jan 2008

Things haven’t gone exactly as planned in Colombia. Three Colombian hostages held by the FARC were supposed to be home by now. But the rescue operation with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at its head, was stalled by trust issues on both sides of the debate. with Venezuelan helicopters waiting for the final coordinates, the FARC called off the rescue mission saying that the Colombian military had been conducting operations against them. This led to Chavez pointing the finger at Colombian President Uribe and and even director Oliver Stone said:

Shame on Colombia, shame on Uribe

(He was part of a huge international contingent supporting the rescue mission).

Chavez authorized to move forward with FARC

capt.sge.uvj08.160907030554.photo00.photo.default-512x456.jpgThings are moving pretty quickly in the FARC hostage situation. This morning, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez said that all he needed to move forward with the getting the FARC hostages freed was the Colombian government’s authorization.

A couple of hours later, El Universal reported that Colombia was “studying Chavez’s proposal”. Now, word just came that Colombia will accept Chavez’s offer and let him facilitate the freeing of three hostages, Clara Rojas, her son Emmanuel, and ex-congresswoman Consuelo González de Pérdomo. The official statement from the government is:

“The government of Colombia authorizes the humanitarian mission based on the terms described and assigns Doctor Luis Carlos Restrepo as its representative delegate.

FARC Offers to Release 3 Hostages to Chavez but not Betancourt

9:17 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Colombia|Politics|Venezuela · Comments Off

19 Dec 2007

rojas.jpgThe Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) said they were willing to release three hostages to Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez or someone he designates. The three hostages named are Clara Rojas, who was kidnapped with former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt in 2002, Ms Rojas’ son from a captor, Emmanual, who was born in captivity, and a former congresswoman, Consuelo Gonzalez. Ingrid Betancourt’s freedom was not offered. Last month Colombia ended Chavez’s involvement in the hostage negotiations.

_44274360_betancourt_ap203b.jpgAfter dropping Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, Colombia has decided to try again to exchange imprisoned FARC rebels for hostages. Perhaps it was the pressure that the families of hostages placed on the Uribe government after videos appeared showing that some of their loved ones, like Ingrid Betancout, were alive. Colombian peace commissioner, Luis Carlos Restrepo, hinted that French president Nicolas Sarkozy could be called in to play an active role in the negotiations, although not in the same way that Chavez did. Former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt has dual citizenship in France and Colombia.

The mother of FARC hostage and once Colombian presidential candidate, Ingrid Betancourt, and other relatives of FARC hostages, went to Venezuela this weekend. While Venezuela didn’t move forward with constitutional reforms promoted by President Hugo Chavez, Yolanda Pulecio and other Colombians trust that he will be the one to insure the safe return of their loved ones.

This is according to a Colombian Senator. Clara Rojas, also a former presidential candidate, and her son are also allegedly set to be released.
