Arrests made: Basque/ETA

2:45 pm By la Macha · Controversia|Spain|Women · Comments Off

23 Apr 2009

I just got finished reading about how there has beenyet another arrest of an ETA top officials.

The serial arrests of ETA’s military chiefs may be even better news in the long term. The four captured over the past year apparently belonged to a hardline faction that pushed for an end to ETA’s ceasefire two years ago. Now there are signs that the peaceniks have regained control. Josu Urrutikoetxea, a veteran who took part in talks during the ceasefire, is said to be back near the top. Arnaldo Otegi, who has served time in jail for terrorist offences, has reappeared as a spokesman for ETA’s political arm. He is said to want a negotiated end to four decades of violence.

I honestly don’t know too much about the Basque/ETA conflict in the Spain region. I know through subcomandante Marcos that it is essentially a conflict over land–and that conflicts over land these days tend to wind up with “government” being “right” and those it’s stealing land from being “terrorists” (witness the recent Somalian “pirate” conflict). But I also know that far too often organizations engaged in violent resistance are beyond highly problematic for the women, disabled folks, queers and other marginalized people of the communities they are from.

So, I’ve been reading about the history of ETA–and as usual, when it comes to far too many factions and organizations that have a valid critique of the concept of the “nation/state”–it is a confusing, long, violent, and far too male centered history.

It reminded me a lot of FARC, an organization that may be rooted in ideals that I can support, but in practice, has become just as mercenary, if not more so, than the nation/state they hope to overthrow. I don’t know if ETA is totally mercenary (it seems like there is at least a faction of ETA that is trying to prioritize the needs of the community rather than the organization), but it sure does seem to have some big problems.

I’m interested in hearing from others who know more about this than I do. What do you know about ETA? Am I wrong in my conclusions? I don’t need a history lesson (unless you’re willing to offer one!) but I would really like to hear about these arrests from somebody who knows more about Basque/ETA than I do!

Northern Spain Starts Day Explosively

1_214014_1_5.jpgA bomb in Legutiano, Basque country, in Northern Spain, exploded this morning at a police barracks, killing one person, wounding two, and leaving two people trapped in the rubble of what is left.

Not surprisingly, the Spanish government is looking at ETA, Euskadi ta Askatasuna, also known as the Basque Homeland and Freedom movement in Basque, a Basque separatist organization, as responsible for the bombing.

Evo denies relationship with ETA

2:03 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Bolivia|Politics|Spain · Comments Off

3096-Evo-Morales.jpgBolivian president Evo Morales is denying ties to the Basque separatist group ETA, responsible for last month’s bombing of a Madrid airport parking lot and the deaths of over 800 people since 1968. The statement was in response to allegations by a Spanish newspaper that the group was seeking sanctuary in Bolivia:

The Spanish newspaper El Correo had reported that a lawmaker from Morales’ Movement Toward Socialism party visited the Basque heartland in June and met with members of Batasuna, ETA’s political arm.

The lawmaker, Feliciano Vegamonte, did not respond to repeated attempts to reach him Tuesday.

A day earlier, he confirmed to a Bolivian TV station that he made the trip and met with “people from social movements” but was not aware of any ETA ties.

El Correo said that with Cuban leader Fidel Castro ailing, ETA fears it could lose the lone country that offers it sanctuary. So it is looking toward Bolivia as a possible alternative. The paper quoted unnamed Spanish security officials as its sources.

Morales stated that in the past he has been linked to the FARC, and that these allegations were also unfounded.

Ecuadorean terror victims will get Spanish citizenship

1:08 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Ecuador|Immigration|Spain · Comments Off

3 Jan 2007

02_wo_spain_blast_4.jpgSpain was rocked Saturday by a bombing at Terminal 4 of Madrid’s international airport, Barajas, in what looks to be the end of a truce between ETA and the Spanish government. Two of the victims in the attack were Ecuadorean immigrants, and now Spain is promising to grant the family members of the missing Spanish citizenship:

López Aguilar [Labor and Justice Minister] reminded the victims’ families that “the first time that terrorism hit foreign residents in Spain was with the March 11th attacks,” and that in this as well as that event the government “will do everything to make sure the family members receive Spanish citizenship.”

“The two missing men are being searched for with insistence and in an effort that will not stop,” he said.
