CADD10204041953_sp.jpgThe ALMA awards are back — and the nominees for the 2006 edition have just been announced:

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. Apr 5, 2006 (AP)— Comedian George Lopez, director Robert Rodriguez and singer Shakira were among the nominees for the 2006 ALMA Awards, which honor artistic achievement by Hispanics in music, television and film.

Singer Marc Anthony and actor Andy Garcia will receive special recognition at the ALMA Awards, the National Council of La Raza announced Tuesday.

Let’s see if VivirLatino manages to get some press passes to cover this. I’m sure you loyal readers would be interested in reading about our antics at the awards, no?

J-Lo, la vieja

jlo(1).jpgShe’s not a vieja yet, though she’ll be playing one in her new movie, El Cantante, which features J-Lo alongside her longtime husband, Marc Anthony. From a snarky British article:

With her face lined with wrinkles, gaudy make-up and unkempt hair, this is Jennifer Lopez as you have never seen her before.

The singer and actress, who normally has flawless skin, was made up to look much older than her 36 years as she shot her latest film El Cantante in New York with husband Marc Antony.

Paquita takes the barrio to the desert

revista-20031205-05.jpgToday’s news continues to bring surprises. I never thought I’d see the day when our beloved Paquita la del Barrio (virgen santisima de la colonia Guerrero) would be making statements in American newspapers, much less in Palm Springs. But it seems Paquita, Mexican female angst personified and a slap in the face to Mexican machismo, was interviewed in the Palm Springs Desert Sun. Too bad the interviewer had some cultural barrier issues going on:

Q: Your new CD is titled “Que Mama tan Chaparrita” (what a short mom). What does that mean?

Hmm…

A few years ago I was surprised to find that, in response to the Latino population boom, Las Vegas casinos were booking Mexican acts like Juan Gabriel and Vicente Fernandez. Today I was floored when I heard that this casino in Palm Springs was booking Paquita, a cult legend in Mexico, but by no means an international name. It’s all about the Latino market, and now businesses are finding niches within the niche. Yes, it has to be a niche market if it finds solace in lyrics like, “Me estás oyendo, méndigo gusano…arrástrate!” I guess I’m part of the niche.
