On television yesterday, Powell said the jail, known for its torture and holding of individuals on no charges, should close “not tomorrow but this afternoon”. And what of the prisoners there now? Powell said they should be transferred to prisons in the U.S. He also called for the abolition of the military tribunal system, saying terror suspects should face trial under existing US federal laws. Currently there are about 380 detainees aka “enemy combatants” in Guantanamo Bay prison, not subject to normal US court rules.
