After a long battle within the Chilean courts, the Constitutional Court of Chile on Friday blocked a government-sponsored program that distributed emergency contraceptives to women as young as 14 free of charge. The morning after pill, as it is commonly known, will still be available at pharmacies with a doctor’s prescription. The problem is that in a country where abortion remains illegal and underground illegal abortion clinics abound, women in Chile, especially poor women in Chile who do not have regular medical care, will be pushed further underground when it comes to their sexual health.

No it’s not the latest VL giveaway, it’s the latest Planned Parenthood givaeaway. Today is Free EC Day. Across the United States, 350 different Planned Parenthood health centers are playing Santa Claus, giving away Plan B to men and women, regardless of age, while supplies last. In August the FDA approved the so called morning after pill without a ’script for women 18 and older but because Planned Parenthood is medically staffed, those younger will be able to access it.
“Emergency contraception is your second chance to prevent pregnancy if the condom breaks, you miss two or more birth control pills, have been raped or have unprotected sex,” Dr. Vanessa Cullins, vice president for medical affairs at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a Planned Parenthood press release. “Every woman deserves every chance to prevent unintended pregnancy.”

A Santiago, Chile Court of Appeals has placed a provisional suspension on Chile’s progressive decision to distribute free contraception to women 14 and older without parental consent. The government’s program had included free distribution of emergency contraception (EC). The injunction was issued Wednesday after a group of parents and two mayors claimed that “the EC-for-everyone plan infringes on parents’ rights because it doesn’t require that teens seeking emergency contraception have parental authorization”, Salon reports.
The morning after pill is still available in Chile with a doctor’s prescription and cash.
