Flor took sanctuary yesterday inside of Adalberto United Methodist Church, the same church where Elvira stayed with her son for over a year. Flor had been ordered to voluntarily leave (how can you be ordered to voluntarily do anything) the country by the 28th after being arrested in an immigration raid in April of 2006.

“I am taking a stand of civil disobedience to make America see what they are doing,” Crisostomo said in a statement that was translated into English. Speaking in broken English, she said immigrants are not terrorists but hard-working people contributing to the economy.
“The real problem is the color and the language,” she said.

elvira.jpgOn Thursday, Elvira Arellano’s 8 year old son Saul, was reunited with his activist mother in Mexico, for good. Saul is set to start third grade in Elvira’s home state of Michoacan. Elvira was arrested and deported from the U.S. in August, leaving her U.S. citizen son behind.

saul-and-elvira-arellano.jpgElvira Arellano’s controversial stay in a Chicago church to avoid deportation and her subsequent removal from the U.S. have stirred up all sorts of opinions here on VL over the past few months. And here’s something that’s likely to stir up even more: Elvira is back in her home state of Michoacán and is sending a message to the Mexican government demanding that it stand strong against “the hate and racism” shown towards Mexican citizens in the United States:

Deported last Sunday by 15 federal agents, the Michoacán native wants to clarify that her struggle isn’t just for Mexicans, but also for Central Americans and undocumented people of other ethnic groups living in U.S. territory, and for this reason she is asking that the Mexican government also respect and treat with dignity those people who come from other countries. “That they not be treated as criminals,” she demanded.

Elvira Arellano Has a Song

elvira.jpgI’m not into folk/folky kind of music (and can do w/o the Jesus reference) but I’m down with the message behind Elvira’s Song.

I also want to publicly state that I am disgusted by some of the comments left here concerning Elvira’s case, particularly those comments attacking her as a mother. As a madre and as a latina, we all do our best for our children and ourselves based on our circumstances. To label Elvira criminal without a larger analysis of the immigration/race issue is ignorant and reactionary. To attack her as a mother is to show little understanding of the history of Latina mami activism.

Breaking News : Elvira Arellano Arrested

elvira.jpgIt’s as if some law enforcement agency was just waiting. Today Elvira Arellano was arrested before 3 p.m. outside Our Lady Queen of Angels church on L.A.’s historic Olvera Street where she had been speaking to reporters. She arrived in L.A. yesterday, after being driven from Chicago, where she sought sanctuary. It is not clear what agency took Elvira into custody (which makes it all the more scary).

Upon hearing the news my daughter, who is only a year older than Elvira’s son, asked what will happen Saul (the son)?

elvira.jpgElvira Arellano is leaving Aldalberto United Methodist Church, the Chicago church she has sought sanctuary a year ago. She decided to stay within the walls of the church to avoid deportation and more importantly perhaps, avoid being separated from her 8 year old son, Saul . But she isn’t just going anywhere? She is taking her story and her struggle to Washington D.C.

“I will go with by Bible and my son and I will read to him from the Holy Scriptures as I do everyday,” Arellano said in a statement sent Tuesday to The AP. “If this government would separate me from my son, let them do it in front of the men and women who have the responsibility to fix this broken law and uphold the principles of human dignity.”

elvira.jpgBy now you should know that 31 year old single Mexican mami Elvira Arellano has been inside Aldalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago with her 7 year old son for three days now. She is not keeping her promise to a santo. she is keeping her promise to her child that she will stay with him and be a mami and confronting the U.S. government that seeks to deport her. Her son Saul was born in the United States and because of that is a U.S. citizen. Earlier this week Elvira was ordered to appear at an immigration office but instead she invoked an old school idea, taken by many activists before her, that churches are sanctuaries and went inside with her child. Elvira knows what’s up. She’s the President of United Latino Family, which lobbies for families that could be split by deportation. She is now one of those families.
