Texas already has strict guidelines in place to make sure that undocumented immigrants can’t access driver’s licenses (apparently it’s safer for people to drive unlicensed). Since Oct. 1, Texas made the guidelines even more strict by requiring foreign nationals to prove they are lawfully here before they can get an original, renewal or duplicate driver’s license or ID card. Additionally:
noncitizens with legal permission to live in the country will now get special, vertical-shaped driver’s licenses bearing temporary visitor designations. The licenses will be valid only until the person’s legal status expires. Immigrants whose legal status is scheduled to expire less than six months from the time they apply cannot get a license or ID card at all.

12 Feb 2008The State House of Representatives in Utah voted yesterday to revoke the driving privileges of undocumented people.
Rep. Glenn Donnelson, R-North Ogden, said the cards are a threat to national security because anyone, including terrorists, can get a federal individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN), which is needed to get a driving privilege cards.
“Utah driver privilege cards are making it possible for illegal aliens to operate in our society,” he said.
Last year alone, about 41,000 driver privilege cards were granted. The bill now goes to the state senate.

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer lost his will to push forward with a proposed plan to to issue driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.
“I have concluded that New York state cannot successfully address this problem on its own,” Spitzer said at a news conference after meeting with members of the state’s congressional delegation.
The plan was unpopular with many because they felt that it would be a means for wannabe terrorists to get ids.
