There are about 600,000 Dominicans living in NYC and Dominican President Leonel Fernandez used to be one of them. Perhaps its nostalgia for times past that have led Fernandez to build a NYC style subway system in Santo Domingo. But not everyone is as excited about this mass transit option especially when they look at the bill. Originally the train was set to cost $464 million. That figure is up to 710 million, more than 2 percent of the Dominican Republic’s gross domestic product and expected to rise. So do Dominicans need a subway or would that money be better spent say on infrastructure or poverty?
Only time will tell.

Who would think that the Dominican Republic has a problem with poverty, what with the star-studded festivities around the launch of a billion-dollar yacht marina in the eastern part of the country this past weekend:
Children of US billionaire Donald Trump, the singer Julio Iglesias and fashion designer Oscar de la Renta were among the stars who gathered Saturday in the Dominican Republic’s Cap Cana to inaugurate a luxury marina, organizers said.Touted as the “most complete and modern marina in the Caribbean,” organizers said in a statement that the facility will, once finished, be able to accommodate 1,000 yachts as well as mega-yachts.

With her recovery from breast cancer in full swing, Puerto Rican actress Adamari Lopez and hubby, singer Luis Fonsi have just purchased a “love nest”, an apartment in La Romana, Dominican Republic.
“Tengo familiares aquí (en la República Dominicana) por parte de mi abuela. Es un hermoso lugar para cuando uno quiere escaparse del mundo”, dijo Fonsi durante la presentación de las nuevas viviendas del proyecto de Los Altos de Casa de Campo.
The talk is that the couple, who married in June of last year, are trying to start a family. What better place to get down to business than in an apartment that averages between $400,000 $1.3 millon?

The world’s smallest man according to the 1990 Guiness Book of World’s Records passed away in New York this past Sunday. 39 year old Dominicano Nelson De la Rosa was an actor who appeared in films as Dr. Moreau’s Island with Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer in 1997 and in a video for A mover el coolo by Illya Kuriaky & the Valderramas. The 54 centimeter tall man had recently been on tour with a circus in Chile and leaves behind a 9 year old son, 5 brothers, and his mom.

I ran across a blog post talking very briefly about a documentary, produced by HBO, supposedly about the sex life of Dominicanos. The post said that it was a “montaje” (fake) and says (translation):
It’s not untrue that there is sexual frenzy in our society, but to me what is presented there seemed staged.
I watched the first part of the video, and I’m not sure what it says about Dominican sexuality (actually, I have some strong feelings about it with no relation to a culture — but I’ll keep those to myself for now), but apparently Dominican talk show host “Nuria” has a few things to say on her show tonight. We’ll stand by for her comments, but in the meantime, the Domincan Tourism secretary has something to add:
“The government’s secretary of tourism rejects the documentary presented by the American television network HBO which promotes the Dominican Republic as a sexual paradise, because the material is sensationalist and totally distorts the social and cultural reality of the Dominican people.”
I’m including a link to the video because I’d like to get our Dominicano readers’ take on what it says, if anything about your culture and your sexuality. Does it stereotype Dominican women? And to all readers: is it offensive?
