My Man Teddy

Don’t we all love Teddy Kennedy? But I want to start off by asking another question.

Why the hell did Caroline Kennedy get a standing ovation when she came out to speak? I know she revolutionized the Democratic Party in the 60’s, wait that was her Dad.

Caroline doesn’t deserve such admiration. Back to the point, Ted has lived a live of accomplishments that can not be compared to any other politician (though Nancy Pelosi likes to think she can). He has revolutionized the power the Senate holds and he has flourished into the best politician in the Kennedy family tree. No matter what obstacle is thrown his way (George Bush) he can tackle it face on and recently that was seen with his cancer. When I watched the beautiful video tribute before his speech I began to cry. The fact that he came to Denver when it was advised of him not to because of his health really states what kind of man he is. His speech was eloquent and passionate with the right amount of force. He stole the night away…yes that include you Michelle Obama.

No, I’m not talking about America Ferrera I’m talking about the great Senator of New York Hillary Clinton. Yesterday, she surprised DNC Hispanic Caucus goers and gave a heart felt speech filled with commitment for the issues that matter the most for Hispanics. She spoke about comprehensive immigration reform and a stronger education system. She spoke to the heart to us, she said “I knows there maybe language Barriers but it doesn’t matter we are all American and we are all strong and we all deserve a system that works and Barack Obama and Joe Biden are going to bring that to all of us.”

She lastly addressed the cynical and GOP bigwig John McCain. She addressed the manipulative ad that his campaign started airing that included clips of her attacks on Obama.

Even though I agree with those critiques (because they are true) the GOP is making me sick with their same old tactic. The GOP should try to refresh their strategies to win an election besides frying your opponent to a crisp with vindictive ads. Hillary responded by saying “I’m Hillary Clinton, and I do not approve that message.” I think that explains why Americans should love Hillary.

DNCC_logo_dnc2008_1_500.jpgI missed Hillary Clinton speaking at the Hispanic DNC Caucus because I was dealing with the nightmare that was the picking up of credentials. But our student correspondent, Estevan, was there so he’ll be blogging his thoughts later.

I did arrive in time to see Howard Dean, who focused on the need to register Latinos and get them to vote. He also spoke of how the Republicans scapegoat Latinos and how McCain flip-flopped on his own immigration reform plan.

Countdown to the DNC : Denver’s Homeless to Get Coiffed

21 Aug 2008

DNCC_logo_dnc2008_1_500.jpgThe Democratic National Convention is only days away, and everyone is getting themselves beautiful for the event, including the homeless in Denver.

There are an estimated 4,000 homeless people in the DNC host city and instead of attempting to find real solutions, it’s much easier to do a makeover. That is, hide them from view, pretend they don’t exist, and fix em up so they don’t look so unsightly.

They arranged for free movie passes and bingo games to get them off the street, as well as temporary housing and free tickets to the zoo and Museum of Nature and Science…According to Rick Sallinger of the CBS TV station, Denver Human Services has been handing out coupons for free homeless haircuts.

But what happens when the media eye shifts away from Denver and the balloons have been deflated?

Money%20stacks.jpgGetting excited about the Democratic National Convention, only 10 days away? VivirLatino is but we’re shelling out money, not making money. Spanish language broadcasters are looking forward to the DNC for the money it will bring in, especially those with stations in swing states.

Santa Monica-based Entravision’s political ad sales will double to $12 million from the last presidential cycle, said Lloyd Walmsley, an analyst in San Francisco with Thomas Weisel Partners.

Univision Communications Inc., which went private last year, expects to take in as much as $20 million in political ads in the second half of 2008, Chief Financial Officer Andrew Hobson said. That would represent a full-year gain of as much as 78% from 2004…

Azteca America, owned by Mexico City-based TV Azteca, almost doubled its political ad sales from 2004 during the primaries, and projects similar gains in the general election, said Brian McCullough, director of spot TV sales in New York. Azteca has nine affiliate stations in Colorado, Florida, New Mexico and Nevada, he said.

Telemundo, part of General Electric Co.’s NBC Universal, also enjoyed record primary spending, said Enrique Perez, senior vice president of sales, who wouldn’t provide specific numbers.

Countdown to the DNC : Cages and Stun Guns Ready

warehouse-cells.jpgWith only 11 days to go before the Democratic National Convention jumps off in Denver, Colorado, the city is preparing space for protesters, in the form of cages topped by barbed wire.

Inside are dozens are metal cages. They are made out of chain link fence material and topped by rolls of barbed wire.

“This is a secured environment,” Capt. Frank Gale of the Denver Sheriff’s Department told CBS4. “We’re concerned about how that’s going to be utilized by people who will be potentially disruptive.”

mountain-lion.jpgOnly 18 more days till the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

VivirLatino is psyched to be covering the convention as credentialed bloggers.

Something we’re not to psyched about? The possibility of mountain lions.

A mountain lion slunk into the master bedroom of an Idledale home early Monday, snatched a yellow Labrador retriever and vanished.

Churchill said the residents had left open the French doors to their bedroom, apparently to cool the house, and didn’t have screens.
The dog’s body was found near the property.

If we had a dog, we wouldn’t bring it with us to Denver.

Don’t forget, you can help VivirLatino get to the DNC by donating.

DNCC_logo_dnc2008_1_500.jpgThere are only 24 days to the Democratic National Convention, and VivirLatino will be there, with your help.

The Rocky Mountain News recently did a write up of the unprecedented number of bloggers invited to report on the DNC, with credentials and mentions VivirLatino.

We have a Latino student correspondent helping us out and making sure that a youth perspective is included in the coverage. While we have credentials to be inside, our coverage will include what’s happening outside, including protests and how the Latino community in Denver feels about the convention, especially as campaigns lay it on thick for the Latino vote.

We’ve been credentialed for the event and are ready to cover it for you, but there is still an obstacle. As a non-traditional, independent media outlet, the costs associated with the event are less than accessible for us.

Please help us get to the Democratic National Convention by contributing a donation. Right now our most immediate need is getting airfare covered.

Denver Police Stock Up on Pepper Spray for the DNC

DNCC_logo_dnc2008_1_500.jpgLooks like I’ll have to pack some anti-pepper spray gear for the Democratic National Convention because the Denver Police are stocking up. From Democracy Now:

Denver Police Department is stocking up on pepper spray guns ahead of the Democratic National Convention. The city has ordered eighty-eight projectile launchers that fire plastic balls filled with cayenne pepper and other substances. Denver is purchasing the weapon from SWAT, Security with Advanced Technology. The news comes just weeks after SWAT announced plans to merge with the company Pepper Ball Technologies. Meanwhile, some residents of Denver are questioning why a half-dozen military helicopters flew over parts of the city on Monday as part of a secret security drill. The Denver Post reported the military aircraft buzzed above the Pepsi Center, the site of the Democratic Convention. A military spokesperson denied the drill was connected to the convention. Lt. Nathan Potter said,“It’s routine preparation for the global war on terrorism.”

Yeah sure. I am randomly selected for those secondary security checks at the airport.
