5 Jan 2011The last year on VivirLatino was really dominated by the immigration debate in the United States. While I will continue to cover the issue of immigration, especially with the likelihood of anti-immigrant / anti-Latino measures being pushed by the Republican led House of Representatives, it would be naive of me to function as if U.S. policy towards Latin America has nothing to do with how Latinos are treated inside the U.S. It would be equally naive to act as if we as Latinos in the United States have no ties to our countries of ancestry and as if policy inside of those countries don’t matter to us, our families, and our communities.
So one of my new year’s resolutions for the site (among many) is to make more of an effort to cover what is happening in Latin America and attempt to make the connections between that and comunities here inside the United States.
There are several elections in Latin America slated to take place this year. The countries with presidential elections this year include Nicaragua, Guatemala, Peru, and Argentina.

A poet friend of mine invited me to join a Facebook Group called , “AMERICA” is not U.S.A. AMERICA is the name for a whole continent”. This US-centrism has been a peeve of mine for at least ten years now, specifically from when I lived in Chile and found myself in the very difficult position of defending my Latina/Puerto Rican identity (Yes, Kai I’m talking about being Rican again, sigh).
Now the idea of who is “America” comes up again against the context of The Summit of the Americas, which started yesterday in Trinidad. Love him or hate him, President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua raised a good point at the start of the Summit, saying:
“It is not of the Americas , because Cuba is missing, Puerto Rico is missing,”
So how can you have a Summit of the Americas without two nations facing important challenges rooted in colonialism?

It was a Latino lefty party yesterday in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua as the Central American nation celebrated the 28th anniversary of the 1979 Sandinista revolution. President Daniel Ortega, presided over the celebrations along with the presidents of Panama, Honduras, and what leftist Latino celebration would be complete without Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez?

If anyone has doubts about the direction Latin America is headed, then one needs to check out the latest elections results coming out of Nicaragua. 16 years ago, Sandinista Daniel Ortega was forced out of office thanks to the United States, as of this morning Ortega is ahead in early poll counts of the presidential elections held yesterday in the Central American nation.
With 15 percent of polling stations counted, Ortega had 40 percent of Sunday’s vote, compared with 33 percent for his closest challenger, the wealthy banker Eduardo Montealegre.
Three others rivals were well behind: Sandinista dissident Edmundo Jarquin, ruling-party candidate Jose Rizo and former Contra rebel Eden Pastora.
To win outright and avoid a runoff, the leftist Sandinista leader needs just 35 percent of the vote and a five-point advantage over his closest opponent.
