Daddy Yankee es animado. No really he is animated, or at least he will be for a comic strip on scooter safety and drunk driving. According to Que Pasa :
The campaign “Yo tengo el control” (I have the control) from the Automobiles Accidents Compensations Administration (ACAA), places the reggaeton singer along with host Antonio Sanchez “El Gangster” driving on the highway facing dangers and distractions.
Maybe Daddy Yankee should make a song called “Si estas tomado no hay gasolina”?

Didn’t Daddy Yankee look fine? I’m not a big reggaeton fan pero he’s a papi. Jessica Alba (who is quoted as saying she doesn’t feel like a “Latin actress”) looks lovely and tiny. Pero contrast that with the subdued and makeupless Shakira accepting her award via video.
Uy looking at Andy Garcia, I realize how much that cuban reminds me of my ex, a half Cubano. I take issue with Andy’s politics pero he is an amazing actor and deserves the Anthony Quinn award. This must be the anti-Castro Cuban bloc, with Andy Garcia, Cristina Saralegui, and Gloria Estefan. Whoa – Did Gloria Estefan have plastic surgery or is it just the hairstyle that makes her look so much younger. And rounding out the bloc is Emilio Estefan.

That’s what he told the L.A. Daily News. Contrary to what “jealous” detractors are staying, reggaeton isn’t going anywhere.
Yankee says rumors of reggaeton’s demise are entirely exaggerated. The Puerto Rican superstar, whose song “Gasolina” is reggaeton’s biggest crossover hit, insists the music is surely evolving. But whatever happens, he adds, the ubiquitous blend of tropical rhythms, reggae, hip-hop and rap is here to stay.
“It’s part of the landscape,” said the singer-producer known to his mom as Raymond Ayala. “It has been used in hip-hop, rap, all the top hit styles. People who don’t even know what they’re listening to love it. It can only get stronger. Those that say reggaeton is going away are just jealous.”
The article points out that despite his fame, Daddy Yankee is still living in Puerto Rico with his wife and kids. He’s still Daddy from the block, it seems.

I’ll admit to being a little bit amargada that I couldn’t be in Miami tonight covering the Latin Billboard Awards live but I’ve tuned into Telemundo anyway to see the promised excitement and well so far am finding the same old same old. Daddy Yankee had his entrance exagerado. RBD was nominated three times in one category and won (oh what a surprise-bring it on RBD fans). Shakira won within the first 10 minutes of the show and looked casual and comfy against the parade of novela protagonistas with over the top gowns and culo baring dancers. There was a well deserved tribute to Rocio Durcal and my favorite performance, given by the Cubano hip hoppers, Orishas. Shakira just took stage singing Hips Don’t Lie with Wycliff Jean. And with that I think I’ll call it a night. I’m sure whatever I miss will be on Cada Día with Maria Antonieta Collins in the morning.

Maybe they saw that VL’s very own Jennifer was calling them out on their silence around the immigration issue. Whatever the reason, a bunch of Latino celebs are finally speaking out. Bobby Pulido, Paulina Rubio, Jose Manuel Figueroa, Maria Sorte, and Daddy Yankee in separate interviews on Univision’s chisme show El Gordo y la Flaca all said something in favor of immigrants (surprise surprise). La chica dorada aka Paulina Rubio gave props to
…the work force and labor the Latino community represents in the US.
and said that:
What we need is a balanced law in both countries.

The hosts for the 2006 Latin Billboard Latin Awards have been revealed. Lupillo Rivera, a huge force in that mix of genres that gringos like to call “Regional Mexican” and TV personality Candela Ferro will be doing the honors:
Rivera is a finalist this year for regional Mexican album of the year, male solo artist for “El Rey de las Cantinas” (Univision/UG) and regional Mexican airplay song of the year, male solo artist for “Ya Me Habian Dicho.”The 2006 Billboard Latin Music Awards will mark the fourth time that Ferro has co-hosted the show. Candela currently presents the top-rated Telemundo primetime program “Decisiones.”
As previously reported, reggaeton star Daddy Yankee and Mexican pop phenomenon RBD — both part of the youth movement that dominated Billboard’s Latin charts last year — are the leading finalists for the 2006 awards. Daddy Yankee is a finalist in 10 categories. RBD, which burst into mainstream consciousness last year with “Rebelde,” is a contender in nine categories, including top Latin albums artist.
More RBD and more Daddy Yankee. Can we get some diversity up in here please?

If you are a reggaeton fan or even a reggaeton hater amazed by its growing cross cultural influence then you need to get your hands on a copy of this past Sunday’s New York Times Magazine which features the rey of reggaeton, Daddy Yankee. The article tells the tale of a star growing up in the poverty stricken ghetto and making it out while struggling to keep it real amid the new found success and money and bling that comes with it. Whether you buy into the reggaeton culture as obviously so many have, it’s eye opening to see how “exotic” the musical phenomenon, those who make it, and those who consume it remain to white mainstream media. For example the writer observes:
In San Juan, club attire for women is normally high heels, bare legs and just enough spandex to cover the parts that need covering…And reggaetón lyrics, even when laced with social consciousness about race and class and life in the ghetto, are often a call, specifically addressed to female clubgoers, for more dancing and less clothing

For those of you hoping that reggaeton was just as passing thing, I have news for you. It ain’t gonna happen. The genre just keeps growing and Daddy Yankee remains the king of the reggaeton reign. More than 500,000 thousand copies of his album “Barrio Fino en Directo” have been sold placing Daddy Yankee for 4 straight weeks at the top of the Billboard Sales Charts. His single “Rompe” has been at the top of the Hot Latin Songs chart for over nine weeks. Daddy Yankee is also numero uno on the Latin Tropical Airplay chart and on the Top Latin Rhythm chart. And if crossing over is any indication of success one only needs to tune to MTV where “Rompe” is at # 5 on TRL. The only thing Daddy Yankee is rompiendo is sales records.

After a long hiatus from the music scene Ricky Martin is back but is he better? The first track off his Life album to be released worldwide on October 11 is I Don’t Care. Here Ricky sings in English with an urban hip hop/R&B beat. The track features R&B diva Amerie and Bronx Rican rapper Fat Joe. He’s definitely trying to appeal to a young urban audience. Maybe he feels he needs to compete with Daddy Yankee who is actually featured on the album as well?
Ricky also has a new look to go with his crossover sound. His hair is cut, he’s got tats, and he looks like he needs a shave.
Personally the new look and sound doesn’t do a thing for this VivirLatino editor. There’s no doubt the Boricua singer is still beautiful and sexy but come on, he’s no thug. The fact that he has Fat Joe on the new single calling a woman a slut and a ho doesn’t add to Ricky’s street cred. In fact it lessens his credibility, making it seem like he’d do anything to stay on the top of the charts and sell cd’s. Ricky, vuelve with what you do best then I’ll reach into my wallet and buy what you’re selling.
