daddy-yankee-2.jpgDaddy Yankee isn’t finished horrifying Ricans and Latinos in general.
Thankfully next month he steps away from politics and into the realm of the fluffy again when he launches a cologne. For $39 (small bottle) and $49 (big bottle) you can smell like a strange pesto spilled on your shows it seems as the main aromas in the scent include apple peel, ginger, cedar leaves, sage, basil, amber, and suede. Mmmm sexy.

With Daddy Yankee’s endorsement of John McCain, suddenly there is a revival of mixing Rican politics with popular music and fashion especially with the rap/reggaetonero culture.

To counter Daddy Yankee’s move to the right with McCain, Fat Joe publicly is lending his support to Barack Obama right from his head down to his toes. fatjoeobama.jpg

And while we can debate the commodification of political figures on shoes and other gear, I wanna shift into the commodification of politics and politics show.

DaddyYankee.jpgYesterday morning, an interview with Puerto Rican reggaeton artist and John McCain endorser, Daddy Yankee, aired on Univision’s Al Punto with Jorge Ramos.

For a while Jorge Ramos danced around the issue of Daddy Yankee’s political endorsement, instead talking about his movie/cd Talento del Barrio, that has the novel story line of a young Rican making it out of the caserios via his music.

When Jorge Ramos finally asks about the endorsement, Daddy Yankee said it was based on McCain’s position on immigration. Someone please get Daddy Yankee a clue.

Everyone wants the Latino vote, even if we are all gang bangers and putas, at least according to the mainstream media. Day after day, out hotness and criminality is highlighted, even in so – called political articles covering endorsements and independent media here at the DNC.

I never thought I’d have anything in common with Daddy Yankee, who recently endorsed Republican presidential candidate John McCain. And no, I’m not talking about being Puerto Rican, I’m talking about being stereotyped.

daddy-yankee-5.jpgIt’s not like we expect much from Daddy Yankee politically speaking. Hell, I don’t even expect him to be aware of the upcoming presidential elections (unless, of course, he reads VL in between perreos), much less endorse a candidate. But that’s just what he’s done (video after the jump) and if you’ve read the headline, you already know that it’s not who you might have expected. A huge WTF was bellowed toward the sky after I read this post from The Washington Post’s The Trail blog after getting a tip from a reader:

The high school girls standing on the risers behind Sen. John McCain looked like any high school girls would during a talk by someone Paris Hilton might describe as “a white-haired dude.” They clapped politely.

And then, when McCain introduced his special guest, they freaked out. They gasped. They put their hands over their mouths. They screamed.

Daddy Yankee, one of the country’s top Latino music stars, strode out, wearing mirrored sunglasses. A Puerto Rican reggaeton recording artist, he appeared next to McCain to endorse the Republican nominee and perhaps give him a boost with Hispanic voters.

daddy_yankee.jpgWe already know that Ricky Martin is the King of the Puerto Rican Day Parade but another Puerto Rican musical act will also be holding court on Fifth Avenue on June 10th. It’s been confirmed that Daddy Yankee will be on the MTV Tr3s float, spitting some reggaeton and waving to the expected millions of onlookers.

daddy_yankee.jpgI don’t exactly if he smells good or bad but hopefully good enough to make his new venture a success. Daddy Yankee, el gran papi of Reggaeton is planning on launching his own men’s fragrance. Let’s just hope he doesn’t call it Gasolina.

daddy_yankee.jpgName: Daddy Yankee aka Raymond Ayala aka El Cangri

Age:29

Occupation:Reggaeton recording artist, business man, actor, radio host

Place of Residence:
Puerto Rico

Bio:From Daddy Yankee’s Website and Wikipedia: Raymond Ayala was born and raised in Las Lamas and Villa Kennedy barrios of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Since the early 1990’s Daddy Yankee worked alongside DJ Playero in P.R. rapping and making music in the genre that would blow up to become reggaeton, that is both loved and hated. Living in the Rican barrio ain’t never been easy and young Raymond did what he had to to survive. When he was shot in the leg between the ages of 16-17 in the hood, he decided to dedicate his life to music. He helped pushed the once undergorund/Rican-centric music into the mainstream and even crossover. He is the first reggaeton artsita to go platinum and international. This thanks in part to the single Gasolina from his 2004 album Barrio Fino. To date he has appeared in over 70 albums, is starring in a movie, is launching his own clothing line, and hosts a syndicated radio show.

Daddy Yankee suing his PR gal

daddy_092905.jpgFollowing in footsteps of fellow Rican JLo, Daddy Yankee is going to court to sue his former publicist for allegedly duping him out of over 30 thousand big ones. According to People en Español, he loaned her money and never got it back, so he and his wife are taking it before the tribunales.

The publicist isn’t making any comments about the controversy except to say that it’s Daddy who owes her the money, telling another magazine: “I’m not going to make comments and will wait until the case gets to the appropriate forum.” Meaning court, I guess.

Anyway, if this means Daddy Yankee is in need of new publicist, I think I know someone who wouldn’t mind having him as a client.
