Age: 58

Occupation: Talk show host, journalist, media mogul

Place of Residence:
Miami, Florida

Bio: From IMDB: “Born January 29, 1948 in Havana Cuba, Cristina was brought up in the strict image of her grandfather, magazine publisher Don Francisco Saralegui, known throughout Latin America as “The Paper Czar.” He introduced young CRISTINA to journalism. In 1960, at the age of 11, Cristina left Cuba to start anew in Miami’s Cuban exile community. She attended the University of Miami, majoring in mass communications and creative writing, while beginning an internship with Vanidades, the #1 women’s magazine in Latin America.”

After rising through the ranks at Vanidades, Cristina went on to become the Editor-in-Chief Of Cosmopolitan en Español, then decided to try her luck at television. Her talk show, “El Show de Cristina” became an instant success, propelling her into stardom and taking her place as “The Hispanic Oprah”. Her show has been on the air for almost 20 years and shows no sign of losing steam, and neither does Cristina.

Cristina la revista gets the ax

june_cover_i.jpgCristina Saralegui — the Cuban talk show queen that mainstream media likes to call “the Hispanic Oprah — has been building her niche media empire since the Latino market was just that: a niche. So it seems strange that now, with such a boom in Latino marketing and an increased demand for content to support advertising, her magazine, “Cristina”, is getting the ax:

Still, experts said they were surprised by the decision, given the growth in the market.

Samir Husni, a professor of journalism at the University of Mississippi who tracks the industry, said the magazine should have been able to survive.

“We have not seen the tip of the iceberg yet,” he said. “At any given newsstand, even at the non-Hispanic areas, we have five to 10 titles in Spanish. There’s no saturation yet.”

GLAAD honors gay-friendly Spanish-language media

10:04 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · TV · Comments Off

27 Sep 2005

Non-profit organization GLAAD has had a tough time getting their heads and hands around the anti-gay presence on many television shows on Spanish-language TV in the years since it launched its People of Color Media Program. They’ve made a lot of headway, though, getting corporate giants like Pizza Hut to pull ads aired on Univision during a show known to antagonize and stereotype gay people. GLAAD’s Media Awards, a start-studded three-city event boasting stars like Robin Williams, Tippi Hedren, etc. makes a big splash each year, and now they are taking the show to Miami, to honor the “good guys” in Spanish-language media. According to a press release, Univision’s Jorge Ramos will present TV’s Cristina Saralegui with the “Premio Valentía”.

Valentía is right. I think it’s pretty valiente for Cristina to publicly support the gay community knowing that a significant number of her viewers do not.

The event is presented by GLAAD’s long-time sponsor Absolut Vodka, along with new sponsor Coors Light.
