For the Latina Week Of Action For Reproductive Justice I decided to talk a little bit more about condoms and condom usage and my relationship/experience with condoms. It’s not often that we even see condoms used in the media especially media focusing on us as Latin@s, Caribeñ@s and people of Color. Although some of us think condoms are all around us, accessible, and an important part of decreasing the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) including HIV, the reality is there’s limited dialogue and even less proper use of them that centers our community.

To contextualize this piece a bit more: while growing up I listened to a lot of Hip-Hop music and still do. I can vividly recall listening to Snoop Dogg on Dr. Dre’s song “ Nuthin But A ‘G’ Thang” where Snoop said

And before me dig out a bitch* I have ta’ find a contraceptive
You never know she could be earnin’ her man
and learnin’ her man – and at the same time burnin’ her man
Now you know I ain’t with that shit, Lieutenant
Ain’t no pussy good enough to get burnt while I’m up in it

Remember the Pope’s statements about how condoms are bad? How they are only making the AIDS epidemic worse? Well his C-level supervisor doesn’t agree. Jesus Christ shows the Pope who’s boss in this hilarious video which answers the question “what would Jesus do?”

Brazilian model strikes out against Pope

74889935_b98f76739c_o.jpgBrazilian model Gisele Bundchen is speaking out against the comments around condom use made by the Pope on his recent visit to her country:

“To prohibit condoms is ridiculous, just think of all the diseases transmitted without them,” the 26-year-old supermodel told the newspaper.

She added: “How is it possible to not want people to use condoms and also not have abortions? It’s impossible, I’m sorry.”

The outspoken Gisele had previously stirred up controversy when she placed the blame for the deaths of Latin American models from eating disorders on the women’s families.

Gisele’s views on condom use and birth control seem to be shared by many of her countrymen, among them, the president of Brazil, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, who recently defied the Pope’s warnings.

Your ID and Condom Please

condoms.jpg One town in Colombia is taking a unique approach to preventing youth pregnancy and AIDS among its young people. In the western Colombia town of Tuluá, when police stop any male, age 14 and over, not only will he have to show his identification papers, but he will have to show that he his carrying a condom too. Not carrying a condom can carry a fine of up to 408,000 pesos, about 180 dollars. Needless to say this move is creating controversy, leading some religious leaders to say this move and other safe sex strategies being implemented across Colombia including the installation of condom vending machines are akin to “selling weapons on street corners”. According to the United Nations, 19% of women age 19 and younger are mothers or pregnant in Colombia and Colombia has 190,000 reported cases of HIV infection, making it the #2 country in Latin America in terms of HIV infection, behind Brazil.
