Hip/Hop Artists Raise HIV/AIDS Awareness

black%20AIDS%20institute.jpgFolks down in Texas were treated to an apparently awesome concert that was also a worthy cause. Mike Jones, David Banner and Day26 (among others) performed a “Hip Hop for HIV” concert to bring attention to the effect HIV/AIDS are having on the black and Latin@ communities. Concert goers received tickets for the concert by getting tested. And although the outreach targeted black and Latin@ communities, the testing was meant for everyone,

“We want to test across the board,” Mr. Jones said. “We don’t just want to reach out to the African-American and Hispanic communities but to everyone.”

I think it’s great that outreach like this is happening, especially given the homophobia that many times courses through mainstream Hip/Hop. I hope it means that the LGBT community is more accepted now, although the pessimistic me thinks it’s more likely that folks are thinking HIV/AIDS is “not just the gay disease anymore.”

Shakira performs for 4000 in Croatia

HP_Pavilion_Concert_Floor_1.JPGTelemundo’s Cotorreando reported today that Shakira’s concert in Croatia was a huge flop, with only 4000 people in attendance of the expected 20,000. Some blame concert promoters for bad marketing of the events, while other cite the fact that the tickets — priced at $56, according to Cotorreando — were well out of the price range for fans in a country like Croatia.

Spain’s EFE via Mexico’s El Universal reports that a lot more was lost on this concert than just money:

Owners of Luna Promotions, the company responsible for the event, are pulling their hair out over a loss 320,000 euros.

Aside from suffering one of the few failures of her career, Shakira is sad because the one who loses the most is a child who has a kidney illness. Part of the profits from the show were to go to his medical treatment.

Does this mean the child won’t receive treatment now? I felt bad for Shakira when I saw the tape, but being “sad” probably isn’t going to help much. Why not shell out the 320K for the kid? I mean, she was just named one of the richest latinas, with a fortune of 66 million dollars.

Salma to host Nobel Prize concert

POD Salma.jpgI thought this piece of news was a bit weird, I guess because I’ve never seen the Nobel Prize concert and I don’t associate the prize itself with Hollywood celebrities:

Mexican film star Salma Hayek will host this year’s Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo next month.

“She is truly enthusiastic about this assignment. I have the impression that Salma is part of Hollywood’s intellectual elite, who feel that leading the Nobel concert is a great honor,” concert producer Odd Arvid Strømstad told newspaper VG.

The concert will be held in Oslo on Sunday, Dec. 11 and will feature artists such as Westlife, Damien Rice, Duran Duran, and the Sugababes.

Oprah Winfrey, Anthony Hopkins and Meryl Streep are among the celebrities who have hosted the concert in previous years.

It’s no weirder than Oprah hosting or Duran Duran performing. Good for Salma.
