Bye-bye Dave, Hello Carlos

999.jpgComedy Central announced officially today what most of us were already speculating: Carlos Mencia is the network’s new Dave Chappelle. As you may already know, Dave left Comedy Central in quite a spot when, after a much talked about exodus to Africa, he subsequently revelealed that he would not be returning to continue his hit show. Chappelle, the network’s highest paid star and the one with ratings to write home about, needed a replacement. It seems they’ve been grooming Latino Carlos Mencia to be just that:

The network announced Monday that it has renewed the Latino comedian’s series Mind of Mencia for a second 13-episode run beginning next March. As part of the deal, Mencia will perform in a one-hour stand-up special for Comedy Central and will serve as emcee of a tour that will hit venues in some 30 U.S. markets in 2006.

Someone Please Stop the Vacilón

smallvacilon.jpg La Mega’s el Vacilón de la Mañana morning radio show is apparently so popular that a movie version oh so smartly titled, El Vacilón: The Movie, will be hitting the big screen soon. The Spanish language radio show is based out of NYC’s WKSQ 97.9 FM aka la Mega radio station. It is a mix of vulgar and insulting jokes and schoolyard pranks mixed in with morning news, traffic, with an merengue or bachata thrown in. Hosted by two Rican characters, Luis Jimenez and Moonshadow, the show is currently syndicated in New Jersey, Puerto Rico, Boston, Hartford, Philadelphia, Tampa and Orlando. So there is an audience ripe and ready for the film which also features actor Paul Rodríguez and spoken word artista Caridad De La Luz aka “La Bruja”.

I’ll admit to having heard the show a few times years ago. I will admit to chuckling during the “Caiste!” segment, where people are pranked called. The rest of the show, which from what I can tell hasn’t changed since the years I last listened, plays to the lowest sense of Latino humor. Everything is wrapped in sexual double entendres and the comedic skits tend to be based in stereotypes and insults about Latino lesbians, gay men, African-Americans, dark-skinned Latinos, Jews, and South Asian immigrants. Women are treated with misogynist jokes.

The film opens tomorrow , October 21.

Latinologues Hits Broadway

10:34 am By Maegan La Mala · Arts|Events|New York · Comments Off

22 Sep 2005

latinologuesLatinologues, a comedy show now on Broadway, is a series of monologues based on a Latino’s experience in the USA.

Though this is its first time on Broadway, Latinologues has been around, with specials on Showtime & HBO. They also have 2 DVD’s available.

I have to admit that I have not seen the show, but I have seen and listened to quotes from their website. Here is a little taste of what to expect. This monologue was given by a character Buford Gomez, Border Patrol, giving a special seminar:

Not every single Latino is Mexican, there’s different kind of Mexicans. There’s Colombian Mexicans, Guatemalan Mexicans…Puerto Ricans are legal Mexicans. Cubans are Mexicans with boats. Argentineans, you are not European, I repeat you are not European.

Written by Rick Najera, directed by Cheech Marin, and performed in English, the show runs through Dec 4.
