Last Week I wrote about how some states were pushing DREAM Act like measures through their legislatures. One of those states was Colorado. However yesterday, the dreams of undocumented students in The Centennial State were squashed thanks to Democrats in the state senate joining with Republicans to vote against the Immigrant Tuition Equity Bill.
Sen. Bill Cadman, R-Colorado Springs, said that granting students who are illegal immigrants in-state tuition was like saying “if their parents robbed a bank, their kids could keep the money.”
Though the bill would require students who get the in-state tuition rate to sign an affidavit stating they would seek legal residency, Sen. Mike Kopp, R-Littleton, said the affidavit “is worth probably less than the paper it’s printed on.”
In hopes of attracting more Democratic votes, proponents added an amendment that said the bill would only become effective upon passage of the federal DREAM Act. That measure being considered in Congress would provide a path to citizenship to illegal immigrants who serve in the military or attend college in the United States.
It wasn’t enough. Democratic Sens. Morgan Carroll of Aurora, Jim Isgar of Hesperus, Moe Keller of Wheat Ridge, Linda Newell of Littleton and Lois Tochtrop of Thornton voted against the bill.
Carroll, after the debate, referred reporters to a statement on her website that said she could not support the bill “in a climate where the state is cutting or eliminating over $1 billion of benefits to the people and is facing a $300 million cut to higher education, which virtually ends higher education as we know it in the state of Colorado.”
Isgar and Tochtrop made similar comments about cuts to colleges, while Keller declined comment on her vote.
Newell, who was elected in November by a razor-thin margin, simply said “I listened to my constituents” when asked about her vote.

Undocumented immigrants may want to stay clear of Colorado, or leave if they are already there in light of a deal made between Republican Gov. Bill Owens and Democratic legislatures that would deny basic federal services such as health insurance and services for the elderly to undocumented immigrants. Under the agreement, millions who currently get such aid would be required to prove their citizenship. About 50 million undocumented immigrants could potentially be impacted by the deal. The scary part is that this plan was a compromise deal that doesn’t include an anti-immigrant referendum in November, which is what Owens and his legislature pals wanted.

Racist congressman Tom Tancredo of Colorado wants to change the U.S. Birthright Citizenship policy so that the children born of immigrants will not attain U.S. citizenship.
A group of 92 lawmakers in the House will attempt next week to force a vote on legislation that would revoke the principle of “birthright citizenship,” part of a broader effort to discourage illegal immigration.
Because of the length of time involved, some immigration experts say that birthright citizenship is not a major incentive for the vast majority of illegal entrants.
Not sure why Tancredo is such a xenophobe, especially when he is the son of Italian immigrants. I always wonder how crazy hypocrites like Tancredo get elected to public office.
“There is no support for the concept in the Senate,” said Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.). “There are certain things that we have done as a nation for a long time that I don’t think we’re going to change. Rolling back the clock is not going to solve the problem of immigration.”

A University of Colorado football player has been suspended for sending a racist email to a Latino member of the cross country team at the same school.
This incident comes a month after the University of Colorado Student Union (UCSU) Tri-Executive Mebraht Gebre-Michael received a racially motivated e-mail on Nov. 15 threatening her life.
“The athletic department is under the same microscope that the University of Colorado education system is, so there’s no reason why these issues shouldn’t be brought to the public.”
I think it’s time for the University of Colorado to take responsibility for the actions of one of their programs. The university recently fired their football coach who presided over a major scandal where football recruits were taken to “sex parties.” There were also numerous rape charges against the football program. One would think that this latest incident would suffice for the school to take appropriate action and show the country that this type of behavior is unacceptable.
