Is Coke poisoning Mexicans?

inside-zero.jpgThat’s what some Mexican consumer rights groups are saying. Coca-Cola is using a potentially carcinogenic — and banned in the U.S. since the late 60s — sweetener for its Coca-Cola Zero product in Mexico.

Sodium cyclamate, which is 30 times sweeter than sucrose and prized because it lacks a strong aftertaste, was outlawed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration 38 years ago over cancer concerns. It was legalized in Mexico last year, shortly before Coca-Cola launched the Mexican version of Coca-Cola Zero, the soda giant’s latest diet drink.Mp>

Recent U.S. and European studies have downplayed sodium cyclamate’s role as a carcinogen and suggested that it is safe in low doses. The sweetener is now legal in more than 50 countries, including Canada and the European Union nations.

Bolivia Doesn’t Want the World to Have a Coke

coca.jpgThe Bolivian constitution is being rewritten and that could impact business world wide. How? One of the provisions being pushed by the constitutional committee would ban foreign companies from using the name of their sacred coca plant.

Margarita Teran, head of the Coca Committee, told daily newspaper La Razon she was dismayed that Coca-Cola can sell soft drinks worldwide without restrictions while Bolivia is barred from exporting products made with coca.

Such a law is not unheard of. It’s what keeps sparking wine from being called champagne, for example. What’s different here is that coca is placed in the same catagory as opium and cannabis by the U.N. and that prevents its legal export, even when it’s not in cocaine. President Evo Morales is trying to change that by pushing coca leaf products. The U.S. ain’t having it though even though currently the U.S. is the number one market for coca’s most well known use, as an illegal drug.

518955.jpgThe Coca Cola company, one of the first corporations to dabble in U.S. Latino marketing (and international marketing emperors) are taking the idea of targeting Latin American immigrants outside of their home country to the Spanish market.

Coca-Cola, recognizing the tremendous growth of the Latino immigrant population in Spain — specifically Ecuadorians — has decided to tap into a market that is being ignored by other beverage companies. They are looking to appeal to the tastes of the Ecuadorian community, who nostalgic for anything reminding them of home, might embrace a soft drink that does just that. In addition, Coke is doing the same with for the Moroccan community.

The company has decided to bring two of their more popular soft drinks in both countries: Fioravanti, a strawberry drink which is consumed so much in Ecuador that it is only topped by Coca Cola, and Hawai, a fruit juice drink popular in Morocco.

shakira_gal5.jpgIt’s not only big name stars like Shakira that are lined up for the Latin American version of the VMAs, set for Thursday, October 20th (10:00 p.m. ET). Broadcasting from Playa del Carmen, Mexico, the VMALAs are sporting sponsorships from some top-tier corporations; ever heard of Coca-Cola, Motorola, HP? From AdNotas:

The event will air on MTV Latin America to more than 24 countries and it will be seen on MTV channels around the world, including MTV, MTV2, MTV Puerto Rico and MTV Español in the US, reaching 80 million households; as well as on MTVs in Asia (India, Thailand and Singapore), MTV Australia, MTV Brazil, MTV Canada, MTV France, MTV Italy, MTV Japan, MTV Portugal, MTV Spain and MTV UK, reaching a potential 418 million households. Additionally, select terrestrial outlets in Latin America will carry the show, with a potential reach of 36 million households.

Pretty good exposure for these multinational brands looking to reach the Latino market both in and outside of U.S. Borders.

In other related news, Shakira leads the pack in nominations for this year’s edition of the VMALAs.
