seenodeadAs a person of very mixed faith I read the following article with sort of a sick feeling in my stomach. Apparently, Rumsfeld (remember him?) used to send daily updates to President Bush that were plastered with quotes from the bible:

One showed US troops trudging through the desert under a passage from Isaiah: “Their arrows are sharp, all their bows are strung; their horses’ hoofs seem like flint, their chariot wheels are like a whirlwind.”

Another showed Saddam delivering a speech to camera with these words from the First Epistle of Peter: “It is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men.”

Draper noted that unlike Bush, Rumsfeld did not wear his faith on his sleeve. And he said the use of the biblical passages was the brainchild of a director for intelligence working under the Pentagon chief.

“Still, the sheer cunning of pairing unsentimental intelligence with religious righteousness bore the signature of one man: Donald Rumsfeld,” Draper’s report said.

“At least one Muslim analyst in the (Pentagon) building had been greatly offended,” it said.

“Others privately worried that if these covers were leaked during a war conducted in an Islamic nation, the fallout — as one Pentagon staffer would later say — ‘would be as bad as Abu Ghraib’.”

Now, really–I don’t think that Rumsfeld technically did anything wrong, at least not compared to the other shit he did (advocating torture, starting wars with little rhyme or reason, etc). But on a purely emotional level, I find this news to be reprehensible. It demonstrates to me on the most base level that the wars the U.S. are in right now were not based on what is best for U.S. citizens–but rather instead were based on and justified on the religious beliefs of a few powerful white men that remain completely disconnected from the people they claim to represent.

Does that sound like anybody else to you?
It does to me.

Black church reaches out to Latinos

7-76.jpgWhile some use divide and conquer tactics to create a rift between the Latino and African American communities in this country, one predominantly black church in Georgia is responding to a recent rise in the Latino population with arms wide open:

It’s an unusual scene for a predominantly African-American church, but the area’s Hispanic population has grown from just 1 percent in 2000, to nearly 9 percent today. And New Birth is acknowledging its new neighbors in a way most historically black churches haven’t.

Long is trying to attract Latino members by hiring a Hispanic band, adding Spanish-language Sunday services, hiring a Hispanic pastor — even by learning Spanish.

“My message has been geared to challenging African-Americans, but I have to be culturally sensitive,” said Long, whose congregation draws more than 25,000 worshippers. “Now, I focus on using biblical principles that are relevant to everyone.”

What a refreshing idea in this age of “modern Christianity” which attempts to drive a wedge between the rich and the poor, the white and the black, the gay and the straight, etc. Many churches across the U.S., black or otherwise, could learn something from New Birth.

Have You Read Your Biblia Today?

biblia.jpgI didn’t realize there was a shortage of Bible reading Latinos but apparently it must be because according to a press release in my inbox today Word Records (a Warner Bros./Curb co.) group Salvador is partnering with the American Bible Society on its “La Biblia Es Mi Guía” (“The Bible Is My Guide”)
national advocacy campaign designed to promote Bible reading among
Hispanics.

“La Biblia Es Mi Guía” is a national Bible advocacy campaign focused on reaching Latinos in strategic cities (New York, Miami, and Los Angeles) by partnering with prominent Latino figures to disseminate the Bible language. The campaign promotes additional outreach through popular internet sites like MySpace.com. Additionally, the American Bible Society
will use its Bless a Bodega campaign to distribute free bible reading
materials to neighborhood businesses in each of these key cities.

Wow bless the bodega? And just in time for Hispanic/Latino Heritage month. Reminds me of those Universal Church commercials that are always inviting me to get my pedacito of the papel milagroso.

Jesus Christ in Mexico City

NT_cristoizt1.jpgEveryone knows that Semana Santa — Holy Week, celebrated this week — is a holiday that is commemorated with some very unique practices throughout the Spanish-speaking world (or wherever Spaniards have treaded; the Philippines actually has one of the most shocking displays of self-flagellation in honor of Semana Santa in the world).

We’ve all seen imagery of the Via Crucis, but have you ever seen J.C. up close and personal, hanging on a cross in a working class neighborhood? The people of Mexico City have, as each year the Iztapalapa neighborhood puts on a spectacle to rival any other. The excellent Mexico City blog Chilanga Banda has a post to bring the unfamiliar up to speed:

The representation of the Passion of Christ has been done in Iztapalapa for over a century and a half to fulfill a promise made by the inhabitants of the area to el Señor de la Cuevita, as a gesture of gratitude for having erradicated a deadly cholera that struck the population in 1833.

What’s behind the banning of the UCC ads?

Another%20UCC%20minister%20for%20equal%20marriage.jpgWhen ads for the United Church of Christ first appeared on some mainstream cable television stations, people were shocked. Shocked because a church was advertising a positive message of love and understanding, instead of the general line of judgement and condemnation. The UCC’s ad creative spoke of a ministry of love and acceptance, with a particular emphasis on the acceptance of gay people into the fold of Christianity.

The message — as well as the UCC’s endorsement of gay marriage — viewed as refreshing by some, is reviled by the Christian Right (called “radical”) and apparently by Spanish language television in this country:

The UCC reported this week that the Spanish version of its 30-second commercial, “Ejector,” was turned down last Thursday by NBC Universal, a family of broadcast and cable networks that includes Telemundo. A separate company, Univision – which also owns the Telefutura and Galavision networks – similarly rejected the denomination’s ad on the same day.
