18 Oct 2007Back in March, Maegan told us how a sculpture of Jesus made in chocolate was raising a stink among Catholics. The artist, one Cosimo Cavallaro, even had to cancel his exhibit due to the controversy. But now the chocolate Chuy is back:
“My Sweet Lord,” an anatomically correct milk chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ that infuriated Catholics before its April unveiling was canceled, returns Oct. 27 to a Chelsea art gallery, its creator said Tuesday. This time, artist Cosimo Cavallaro said he expects the public exhibit to proceed without a problem.
“There is nothing offensive about this,” Cavallaro said of his controversial confectionary work. “If my intentions were to offend, if I did do something wrong, I wouldn’t be doing this. But I didn’t do anything wrong.”
Cavallaro, who received death threats before the April show was canceled, said the vast majority of his mail was in support of his six-foot piece.
AP reports that the exhibit, to be held at the Proposition Gallery in New York City, will also feature chocolate Virgin Marys and Saints.

Looking for something that goes to the original Easter message and is tasty for your Easter basket? Then look no further. “My Sweet Lord” is a 6-foot anatomically correct milk chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ.
“This is one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever,” said Bill Donohue, head of the watchdog Catholic League. “It’s not just the ugliness of the portrayal, but the timing — to choose Holy Week is astounding.”
The 6-foot sculpture by artist Cosimo Cavallaro was to debut Monday evening, the day after Palm Sunday and just four days before Roman Catholics mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. The final day of the exhibit at the Lab Gallery inside midtown Manhattan’s Roger Smith Hotel was planned for Easter Sunday.
