Our good friend, activist, and writer Charlie Vázquez has been the focus of a new media project by several NYU students. Charlie is the host of the PANIC! series, where VL’s own Maegan has been featured, and in this short he discusses his experiences as a gay Latino man being raised in the Bronx, how his writing is a result of his environment, and what he has learned through his experimentation with his craft.

The film was created by Acacia Beach, Michael Wright, and Rahm Kim.

To find out more about Charlie, the final PANIC! of 2009, or to read his musings and interviews on current Latino literature, visit his blog.

hispanic-1I had so much fun at the first Hispanic Panic and the event was such a success that it’s happening again. I hope that those in the NYC area can come through and support the amazing work of Latino writers/artists.

Host Charlie Vázquez has gathered a brazen roster of Latino/a literary talent, and with an LGBT/feminist slant that is sure to shock and reveal. Join him and literary ninjas Karen Jaime, Charles Rice-González, Cristina Izaguirre, Maegan ‘La Mamita Mala’ Ortiz and special guest, scholar and writer Larry La Fountain, who will be joining us from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, to promote his new book Blue Fingernails. These six writers will be presenting writing chronicling the politics and desire of contemporary New York City queerness and much, much more.

Charles Rice-Gonzalez Reads at HISPANIC PANIC!I’m running a little slow today because I’m tired and yes, a little hungover, pero it was all worth it. Last night’s HISPANIC PANIC! reading at Nowhere,NYC hosted by Charlie Vazquez, was the most fun I have had in a long time.

I read two older poems and a new poema en tres partes called @ndo aka Twitterputeando/Fucking Statehood. Charlie Vazquez read a story about juegos/jugos de pelotas. Charles Rice-Gonzalez, Executive Director of BAAD!, read from his forthcoming novel Chulito, and Karen Jaime spit poetic love to Dominican Yols, drag kings and hope. We were quite a mix as was the audience that came through and had nothing but love.

Plus I met some wonderful new amigos, drank wine, and danced to Cuban music.

I think I’m going to try and make these readings regularly and so should you. The next one is in February, which is billed GENDER PANIC! and March (GIRL PANIC!), which will feature female erotica writers.

Just tell them Patty Peña sent you.

charlietoledo10%5B1%5D.JPGA transgender Mexican gets involved in a complicated relationship with a young man caught between pandilla life and a gringo offering the American dream. A clown struggles between a life of entertaining children and a punk lifestyle. These are just some of the tales that Charlie Vazquez brings together in his book, Business as Usual, published by Fireking Press.

This Bronx boy weaves some fantastic tales that reveal the influence the punk subculture of the 80’s had on him. The two novellas and three short stories (written in New York City, California, Baja Mexico and Oregon), reveal underground queer Latino cultures that function parallel to what is known as mainstream and what happens when they intersect. The stories in the book draw you into these worlds and when you’re done, you’re left with a sort of hangover, with flashes of what you’ve just read coming back at you.

Charlie Vazquez’s Business as Usual can be purchased through his website, or if you’re in NYC, you can pick it up at St. Mark’s Books, which is an amazing bookstore. Support independent Latino artists!!
