VL’s Maegan la Mala at Hispanic PANIC! Tonite in NYC

For the third time, yours truly, VL’s own managing editor, Maegan la Mamita Mala Ortiz will be reading at Hispanic PANIC!, a reading series featuring queer Latino writers hand picked by Charlie Vazquez.
That’s happening tonite
8 pm sharp at Nowhere, 322 e. 14th st, NYC.
Featuring: Orlando Ferrand, Alicia Anabel Santos, Aaron Powell, Maegan La Mala Ortiz, Miguel Angeles, and Cristy Road.
This will be my third PANIC! and I am so excited. Charlie, who has been featured here before does a magical job of curating (and sharing his own work). The readers are always amazing and the audience spectacular.
For those who haven’t attended a PANIC! reading before, you can read all about it in this piece that was featured in Viva!, the Latino pullout section of the New York Daily News. The feature article was written by fellow PANIC! writer Erasmo Guerra.

Friend to the VL familia and the brains behind the PANIC! series in which our own Mamita Mala has performed, Charlie Vázquez is releasing his second novel this month. Contraband is available April 15, 2010, below is the synopsis, which I have to say is intriguing and I’m excited to get my hands on this book:
Inspired by Latin-American revolutionary struggles, this riveting work of Latino noir follows the paranoid underworld exile of Volfango Sanzo, a man so haunted by his secrets that he escapes to sprawling networks of underground tunnels and labyrinths in near-future America—where dissidents and “lunars” are seeking refuge from the smoldering ruins of a nation plagued by a deadly civil war and revolution. Volfango is certain that renegade genes in his DNA will be exposed by government-mandated “gene tests,” so he vanishes before his scheduled test date, terrified of being discovered and executed. He also suspects he is being hunted by a government ministry, who wishes to silence him before he speaks. What will he find in those dangerous underground worlds populated by rebels and pariahs? And what secrets does he keep? Will he survive against bleak odds in an underworld where sunlight, food and water are scarce?

27 Jan 2010Without a doubt, this is one of the best reading series that I have ever been a part of. If I weren’t hosting the live blog of President Obama’s State of the Union Address tonite, I would be at Nowhere, with a glass of vino and occasionally dancing bomba y plena by the bar.

Designer Imposter, KAREN JAIME, Jayson Keeling with Alison Ward and The Ruffian Arms, Rachel Mason and Mark Golamco, Ivan Monforte, and Charlie VázquezLIPS LIKE MY SUGAR WALLS promises an evening of world premieres by emerging artists working in New York City. As a curatorial concept “Lips Like My Sugar Walls” acknowledges the primacy of our outer layers, lips, foreskin, culo, mandala, epidermis, and labia. They propel us. We use them in so many ways. We spit, suck, sing, slurp, squirt, lick, fuck, eat, blow, flirt, and kiss. What can a post-punk, Prince-influenced mash up look, feel, sound, taste, smell like? Does it hurt, love, fear, accept? This performance showcase brings together a raw, innovative mix of New York artists. All are contemporary artists who use interdisciplinary practices to produce performative works in video, poetry, photography, and song.
The world premiere of Ivan Monforte’s short video “Tres Veces” reveals the artist and three other men in a racy interpretation of Paquita La Del Barrio’s ranchero song of revenge “Tres veces te engañe.” For the first time, Jayson Keeling collaborates on a slide show and text performance with the punk antics of Alison Ward and her rock group The Ruffian Arms. Bringing the immediacy of the edgy East Village scene, performance artists Karen Jaime and Charlie Vázquez, both dynamic writers and spoken word poets who recently performed for Hispanic PANIC! at the queer bar Nowhere, will deliver new works, including a rare appearance by Vázquez as “Spittles the Clown.” Designer Imposter (aka Ramdasha Bikceem), known on the queer club circuit for her fierce mix of dance music at parties like Pantyho’s, will perform new original songs. Rachel Mason and Mark Golamco, who have worked together since 2003, will play a set of their experimental, collaborative music with viola accompaniment.
