JLo sued over TV show

5:06 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|Controversia|Justice · 2 Comments

2 May 2006

tickets-to-jlo-boutique-opening-on-auction.jpgCould we go a whole two days without writing about JLo? I knew we couldn’t do it. Maybe we should just start a JLo category. After a long day of being en la lucha yesterday, it’s time for some chisme.

After suing her ex, now JLo herself is getting sued by a guy who says she stole his idea for a TV show. From Yahoo! News:

A television writer has filed a lawsuit saying Jennifer Lopez and UPN stole his idea for a series based on his move from Brooklyn to Miami and involvement with the modeling and nightclub scenes.

Jack Bunick’s lawsuit claims “South Beach,” a TV series executive-produced by Lopez that debuted Jan. 11 on UPN, mirrors a script he wrote in 1999 for a pilot episode of a show that would have been called “South Beach Miami.”

Bunick’s script was about two young men from Brooklyn who travel to South Beach, where one of them quickly gets involved with the club and modeling scenes, according to the federal suit.

Has anyone seen the show? The premise sounds horrid and it’s on UPN. That’s enough for me to pass blind judgement on it.

Where are the Hollywood stars when you need them?

5:03 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Activism|Celebrities|Immigration · Comments Off

13 Apr 2006

kanye.jpgActors and other performers — Latino or not — are shutting up about the immigration issue. AP reports on how, with a few rare exceptions (George Lopez, EJ Olmos, and Eva Longoria), Hollywood is keeping its trap shut with regard to this hot button issue for fear of “career suicide”:

Fear of career damage, confusion over a complex issue abruptly supercharged by waves of nationwide protests, and historic detachment from Hispanic realities are among the explanations offered by industry insiders and observers.

Not that the movement has needed famous standard bearers – it has been notable for its bottom-up genesis that has left it without recognizable leaders.

Oh no you didn’t Eva

Eva.jpg When desperate housewife Eva Longoria’s boyfriend, San Antonio Spur’s Tony Parker, was pulled over during a traffic stop , Longoria had a few things to say. According to the officer who wrote the citations, Longoria shouted “He’s just a Mexican bike cop. He only wants your autograph.” Longoria denied making that statement through her publicist saying

It’s a shame that one officer conducted himself in such an inappropriate and disorderly manner. I never made any sort of racial slurs, let alone made any comments about the officer being Mexican, as a Mexican myself.

gael_garcia_bernal.jpg Gael Garcia Bernal is much more than a pretty face and a talented actor, he is using his fame to speak out about causes that he cares about and feels strongly about. Today in Hong Kong, Garcia Bernal joined on a fair trade campaign run by the humanitarian aid organization Oxfam. Specifically the 27 year old actor spoke about the negative impact genetically modified corn exported from the U.S. under NAFTA was having on the agricultural economies of countries like his own native Mexico.

J-Lo, la vieja

11:53 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|Movies · 2 Comments

6 Dec 2005

jlo(1).jpgShe’s not a vieja yet, though she’ll be playing one in her new movie, El Cantante, which features J-Lo alongside her longtime husband, Marc Anthony. From a snarky British article:

With her face lined with wrinkles, gaudy make-up and unkempt hair, this is Jennifer Lopez as you have never seen her before.

The singer and actress, who normally has flawless skin, was made up to look much older than her 36 years as she shot her latest film El Cantante in New York with husband Marc Antony.

Eva Longoria: Lalaland’s new tourism ambassador

7:29 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Los Angeles|Marketing · Comments Off

18 Nov 2005

evalongoria1.jpgI thought Eva Longoria was a proud Texican…or at least that’s what she’s always playing up in interviews. I thought she hated Hollywood. Didn’t she say

“I’m just a Texan through and through. I want to move back to Texas as soon as I’m done with the show, whenever that is. You know, I’m never followed by paparazzi in San Antonio.”

But wave some dinero in her face and give her a chance to plug her latest venture and she’ll say this:

“It doesn’t get better than driving down Sunset Boulevard and catching a comedy show like ‘Hot Tamales Live’” she says, referring to the all-female comedy variety show she co-produces at the Comedy Store, located on the Sunset Strip.

Longoria says, “Los Angeles is a great place to live, work and play. I am excited to be part of an effort to promote LA to visitors from around the world.”

JLo, the reality show producer

2:17 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Entertainment|TV · Comments Off

17 Nov 2005

Pt People JLo Full.jpgShe’s been a dancer, an actress and a singer. Now Jenny from the Block is jumping on the reality show bandwagon (and retracing her steps as a fledgling young dancer) to produce a new series which chronicles the struggle for fame for some L.A. area talents:

La serie de televisión aún no tiene título y se centrará en las vidas de diferentes bailarines de Los Angeles (EEUU) que quieren ser famosos.

La trama recuerda los comienzos de López cuando se dio a conocer en el mundo del espectáculo como una de las bailarinas “Fly Girls” de la serie de variedades “In Living Color”, que se emitió en la década de 1990.

Rumor has it that JLo will act as executive producer and that the show will be co-produced by her company, Nuyorican Productions and MTV.
