barack-obama2President Obama spent Sunday giving the commencement address at Notre Dame. A little context: Arizona State University recently refused to give Obama an honorary doctorate when they asked him to give the commencement at their school. There seemed to be no reason or rhym behind the decision–which lead to this excellent report by the team at the John Stewart show.

Notre Dame students (who actually have a legitimate beef with Obama) saw this and wondered why on earth their school, which is Catholic and thus as an institution, anti-abortion, would 1. invite an openly pro-choice supporter to speak in the first place, and 2. reward that pro-choice speaker with an honorary doctorate. Students have protested regularly leading up to the speech, and got in some moments of protest at the actual event.

Obama seemed to hold his own, however, earning a standing ovation and reluctant respect from news outlets. The following is from Fox News:

He said the views of the two sides of the debate are “irreconcilable” but can be honored.

“I do not suggest that the debate surrounding abortion can or should go away. Because no matter how much we may want to fudge it — indeed, while we know that the views of most Americans on the subject are complex and even contradictory — the fact is that at some level, the views of the two camps are irreconcilable,” Obama said.

“Each side will continue to make its case to the public with passion and conviction. But surely we can do so without reducing those with differing views to caricature,” he said.

On the specific issue of abortion, Obama urged the public to at least agree that it is a “heart-wrenching” decision for any woman, and that the country should work to reduce the number of women seeking abortions by reducing unwanted pregnancies and making adoption more available.

So, looking past the obvious irony that a man is deciding how a conversation about women should be discussed (and many of the protesters were men), I think it was a good speech in so much that for once, when there were protests going on, a public figure actually talked about those protests instead of barreling through some bullshit speech as if half the audience wasn’t standing with it’s back to the person.

But I do have one nitpicky issue: why does choosing an abortion always have to be a gut wrenching heartbreaking horrible decision? Why is it that the only way pro-choicers can frame the debate in a way that isn’t offensive is if they frame it around a woman who is inherently tragic rather than assertive and active?

It’s simply yet another version of the virgin/whore dichotomy (good tragic wonderful woman sacrificing her desired child just to survive in evil world versus evil whore that uses abortions as birth control)–and it’s frustrating. Why are women so easily reduced to simple caricatures ? (Oooh, the irony)

Ingrid Betancourt Meets With Pope

I was kinda surprised to read today how much meeting the Pope meant to Ingrid Betancourt. I didn’t realize many of us Catholics/ex-Catholics still felt any serious emotional connection the Pope, most Catholics I know are lovers of La Virgin and occasionally remember some ancient rule (like eating fish on Friday’s) as way to show a seasonal respect to La Virgin.

I can see Betancourt’s point though, that hearing a trusted voice after being held captive for years has a way of being inspirational.

“It’s hard to explain the psychological effect this has on a prisoner, what it meant to know we hadn’t been forgotten at a time when we thought we didn’t exist,” Betancourt said. “The voice of the Holy Father was like a light.”

Betancourt said she told the pope about her distress for the hundreds of hostages FARC still holds and her concern for Colombia’s future after decades of civil war.

“The pope is pained by the suffering of the prisoners,” she said. “I know his prayers are also dedicated to obtaining the freedom of all the prisoners and peace in my country.”

mahony_3.jpgLeaders of several California religious groups held a press conference earlier this week in San Rafael (near San Francisco) calling for an end of the recent wave of immigration raids, and empathy for the plight of undocumented immigrants:

“I don’t think the way they enforced the law is right, or just, or moral, or tolerable, especially for children,” said San Francisco Auxiliary Bishop Ignatius Wang, who was born in Beijing.

“We all are immigrants some way or another, and why should we treat other immigrants as aliens?” he added. “If the government wants to secure the borders, it is right. But if they treat human beings inhumanly, it’s not right.”

Mexican Archibishop Sued over Molestation Cover-up

_39790601_cardinal203_ap.jpgThe Latin Americanist reported yesterday on a bombshell story: Mexico’s Archbishop, Norberto Rivera, is being sued for allegedly covering up for a priest who was molesting a former altar boy, along with L.A.’s Cardinal Mahoney. The Catholic News Service tells us more about this scandal:

A Mexican man is suing the cardinals of Mexico City and Los Angeles, claiming the cardinals covered up crimes of a priest accused of sexually abusing boys on both sides of the border.

In a civil suit filed in California, the man accused Cardinals Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles and Norberto Rivera Carrera of Mexico City of negligence, claiming they aided the flight of Father Nicolas Aguilar Rivera and that they were partially responsible for sexual battery due to their negligence.

Spokesmen for both cardinals denied the charges.

In a Los Angeles court Sept. 19, Joaquin Aguilar Mendez of Mexico City filed the suit against the cardinals and the Diocese of Tehuacan, Mexico, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Aguilar alleged the cardinals transferred a Mexican priest to the United States in 1987 despite knowing that he had a record of molesting minors in Mexico. Cardinal Rivera headed the Diocese of Tehuacan at the time.

At a Sept. 20 press conference in Mexico City, Aguilar said the cardinals also helped Father Aguilar flee Los Angeles and return to Mexico, where Aguilar claims the priest raped him in 1994 when he was a 13-year-old altar boy.

Rivera was one of the myriad priests that were candidates to succeed Pope John Paul II.

Like to get wasted? You could be a nun

nuns.jpgYou can’t make this stuff up. A group of nuns from Barcelona, Spain has launched a curious (understatement) campaign to convince women that it doesn’t matter if you like to party, get wasted, make skrills…you can be a nun too! From the site (translated), “Mi vocación”:

“Me a nun? Ha-ha!

You like men, nightclubs and money?

Do you fall in love easily?

Of all the options life has to offer, every young woman should consider, as well, these two options: should I be a gigolá (female gigolo) or a nun?”

Oh my (excuse the expression) God, what?!
