Ford Wants a Mexican Fiesta

1976_ford_fiesta.jpgHow many of us have chuckled at the ridiculousness of the name carmaker Ford gave one of its low-end cars — the “Fiesta”? Well that little piece of metal’s name will be a little more authentic, as the car will now be built in Mexico, a change that The Christian Science Monitor calls “a blow for Detroit”:

But for Mexico, Friday’s announcement – which has been heralded as the largest manufacturing investment in the country’s history – is a decisive feat.

President Felipe Calderón called the $3 billion deal a “turning point.”

While the US automaking industry sags – undergoing massive restructuring and downsizing – Mexico’s production has expanded, especially for small, low-cost vehicles. Last year, Mexico produced a record number – over 2 million – and analysts forecast that by the year 2015 production could at least double.

The CSM says that the production of these smaller vehicles could position Mexico as a center for fuel efficient cars, bringing back some of the money lost as manufacturing jobs have moved to China.

The Pope wants you be a better driver

ml_popemobile.jpgIt’s not enough that the Pope wants to tell us what to do and what not to do with our own bodies — now he wants to cramp our driving style. The Vatican announced today, via press release, its Ten Commandments of Driving. Heed thee:

The 36-page document was put together by the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Migrants and Itinerant People.

“Thou shalt not drive and drink”, “thou shalt not make rude gestures behind the steering wheel” and “help accident victims” are among the 10 recommendations for motorists.

The document also warns that driving can bring out “primitive” behaviour in motorists, including “cursing, blasphemy, loss of sense of responsibility”.

It says that automobiles can be “an occasion of sin” – particularly when they are used for dangerous overtaking or for prostitution.

I’m guessing the Pope-mobile has never been the site of such transgressions.

toyota-camry-01.jpg In what may be the first fully bilingual ad to appear during the hot commercial time slot, during the Super Bowl, Toyota is airing a bilingual ad for its Camry, the nation’s top selling car 8 out of the past 9 years. The commercial uses the example of how Latinos in the U.S. move between English and Spanish to promote hybrid cars which switch between gas and electric power. The ad features a Latino father and son, in an attempt to appeal to different age demographics.

Latinos die in pedestrian accidents

6:45 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Georgia| States| society · Comments Off

img_pedestrian_accidents_1.jpgThis issue is very sad, and really points to how unliveable many American cities are for those without the means to own a car. I know that where I am from is one of these places. Sidewalks are scarce and buses come every 2 hours, if you are lucky.

Since many of the new Hispanic immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries have limited access to vehicles or public transportation, they walk where they need to go. At the same time, pedestrian infrastructure in the South is often lacking, officials say.
