3 Oct 2007I looooooove Calle 13. Last year Ivy Queen was hating on them for all the Latin Grammy Awards they won. Let’s see if this year is a repeat. I think they have a good chance in this category.

Picture this, a palm tree in the background, a drink in my hand, and Calle 13 next to me. This was no dream, this was the album release party for Calle 13’s sophomore effort held last night at the Chelsea, NYC lounge Stereo. The fieston, sponsored by Latina Magazine, celebrated Residente o Visitante featuring Tango del Pecado and la Crema. The video for Tango del Pecado looped on a big screen at last night’s party. Both Residente y Visitante ( René Pérez y Eduardo Cabra) were gracious and patient. Be sure to pick up their new album which drops officially on April 24. More pics after the jump.

I heart Calle 13, especially Residente born as René Pérez Joglar. Besides having lyrical skills and words that just crack me the hell up, their tone and accents are enough to make this Rican proud that they are Rican too. Their latest video, El Tango del Pecado, it true to Calle 13 form and is a family affair. In the video Residente is marrying none other then his real life girlfriend 2001 Miss Universe Denise Quiñones. René’s mami, actress Flor Joglar, appears and sings in the video. And for those who say that Rican hip hop and reggaeton have no love for each other, you can spot Tego Calderon and Julio Voltio in the video too. Ay I can’t wait for Calle 13’s new cd, Residente or Visitante to drop very soon. If you haven’t seen the video you can see it right here after the jump.

These include Videologia- a half-hour special highlighting their video history; Rock Dinner- where three fans in Bogota, Colombia, cooked patacones and aguacate, Colombian-style for Residente y Visitante.

Grammy award-winning Calle 13 is looking to sue Hugo Chavez’s rival for the presidency of Venezuela, Manuel Rosales. According to the reggaeton stars, Rosales used their song “Atrévete-te” without their permission during his campaign events:
“The use [of the song] may lead to serious legal consequences for whomever is using it,” the group’s attorney Juan Dalmau told Puerto Rican daily “El Nuevo Día” in today’s issue.“Calle 13’s position is clear: cease and desist,” said the attorney, who also sent a message to the Venezuelan consulate in Puerto Ricos stating the position of the group and its representatives.
Meanwhile, Rosales’ PR guy is biting back, saying that the song was “inspired” by the Calle 13 hit but isn’t the same, and adds that the song was performed by Venezuelan musicians.

We may not have the greatest (read cleanest)beaches pero the big mango has plenty to get excited about during the summer especially when it comes to FREE musical offerings. One of my personal favorites is Central Park’s SummerStage that always offers up some hot Latino acts for all musical tastes. This year the lineup includes Ska Cubano, Seu Jorge, Jose Gonzalez, Alex Cuba Band, a noche flamenca, From Mambo to Hip Hop, and the 4th Brazilian Film Festival of New York: This Is Bossa Nova, Lenine. I will personally be hitting most of these shows (with my camera) but I think I’m most excited about the hip-hop rock en espanish mash up offered on August 5 with Puerto Rico’s Calle 13 and Argentino Gustavo Cerati (just writing about it is getting me all hyped).
Check out the complete SummerStage lineup at the official website
