Al Punto con Jorge Ramos is my favorite Sunday morning show. Not because I particularly like Ramos pero he does have some good interview subjects. Yesterday morning he interviewed Calle 13. and I thought that I couldn’t love Residente y Visitante more than I did, pero I now do.
The conversation on the Univision news/talk show, was more about politics than music and I appreciate the fact that Calle 13 didn’t shy away from their opinions.

I love Calle 13 and Cafe Tacuba pero I’m not sold on this joint effort. No se. What do you all think?

One of my favorite Rican musical duos is set to drop their third album and based on the title alone, it promises to be as politically charged as ever. Calle 13′s new album, set for release on October 7th, is called Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo, or in English, Those Left Behind are Coming with me.
Despite commercial success, the Rican hermanos haven’t been afraid to tackle controversial issues head on, like immigration and the FBI murder of Machetero leader Filiberto Ojeda Rios.
The first single off the new album, with the same name, is set to drop later this month.

Last night was the last night of the Festival de Viña del Mar. On Saturday night Calle 13 tore it up, even performing in the dark after all the tech people had left the ampitheatre in the Chilean seaside city. In classic Calle 13 style, they made their performance relevant by bringing in local performers to participate with them up on stage and by shouting out their support of the Mapuche struggle. They also defied the mainstream reggaeton movement by dancing onstage, not with the skinny booty shaking girls, but with real sized women.

28 Dec 2007This time of year is chock full of lists looking back at the year that is ending and VivirLatino is no different. 2007 was a year of great musica and I have my favorites. Here they are in no particular order:
Calle 13′s Resident o Vistante. How could my Ricans not be on my list. I was blessed enough to go to the release party and get close and personal with the chicos and I saw them sweep the Latin Grammy Awards in Vegas. Their lyrics are unbeatable and musica with a message always makes la mala happy.

30 Oct 2007Calle 13 wone three Latin Grammy Awards last year, and VL was there. This year VL will be there again to see if they win any of four nominations Residente o Visitante: Album of the Year – Best Urban Music Album – Best Urban Song (“Pal Norte”) and Best Music Video (“Tango del Pecado”). Even they don’t win (they likely will though), the duo will also be performing live in Vegas!

Picture this, a palm tree in the background, a drink in my hand, and Calle 13 next to me. This was no dream, this was the album release party for Calle 13′s sophomore effort held last night at the Chelsea, NYC lounge Stereo. The fieston, sponsored by Latina Magazine, celebrated Residente o Visitante featuring Tango del Pecado and la Crema. The video for Tango del Pecado looped on a big screen at last night’s party. Both Residente y Visitante ( René Pérez y Eduardo Cabra) were gracious and patient. Be sure to pick up their new album which drops officially on April 24. More pics after the jump.

I heart Calle 13, especially Residente born as René Pérez Joglar. Besides having lyrical skills and words that just crack me the hell up, their tone and accents are enough to make this Rican proud that they are Rican too. Their latest video, El Tango del Pecado, it true to Calle 13 form and is a family affair. In the video Residente is marrying none other then his real life girlfriend 2001 Miss Universe Denise Quiñones. René’s mami, actress Flor Joglar, appears and sings in the video. And for those who say that Rican hip hop and reggaeton have no love for each other, you can spot Tego Calderon and Julio Voltio in the video too. Ay I can’t wait for Calle 13′s new cd, Residente or Visitante to drop very soon. If you haven’t seen the video you can see it right here after the jump.
