Bush Street in San Francisco is one of my favorite thoroughfares — in spite of the name. In this, the dawn of the Obama age and the end of the Bush era, a few concerned San Franciscans thought it only fitting to change the name of that street to reflect our current political reality:

The San Francisco-based organization Concerned Republicans Assaulting Posterity (C.R.A.P.) is claiming full and complete responsibility for the street sign changing of Bush Street to Obama Street the morning of Tuesday, January 20. A small but mighty group of about 40 fairly intelligent individuals joined together Monday evening and distributed the signs amongst C.R.A.P. members and loyalists in an unusual moment of solidarity with Barack Obama supporters.

The group began changing the signs shortly after midnight. “Even though at first we thought Bush Street was named for our beloved Bush family, we realized that wasn’t true after we did some reading,” said one shirtless and bearded group member, who called himself Molotov II. “We wanted to show people that even we and our world renown organization, vehement supporters of the Republican party — we believe 92 percent of all Democrats are dirty — we are all still Americans, just like Mexico said on 9/11.

wiizapatilla.jpgSpanish blogger Polonio 210 credits President Bush’s shoe ducking skills to the latest Wii game : “Wii Zapatilla”.

Now if only there was a game where we could throw shoes at Bush. My kids would love it and so would I.

But the president’s message on progress in the region was having trouble competing with the videotaped image of the angry Iraqi who hurled his shoes at Bush in a near-miss, shouting in Arabic, “This is your farewell kiss, you dog!” The reporter was later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadia television, an Iraqi-owned station based in Cairo, Egypt.

In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt. Iraqis whacked a statue of Saddam with their shoes after U.S. Marines toppled it to the ground following the 2003 invasion.

Unfortunately, the journalist missed (that or Bush’s reflexes are that good).

s-BUSH-NEIGHBOR-large.jpgOn his way out the door President Bush has already got new digs for his post-presidential life, pero not all his soon to be neighbors are thrilled with the idea of having Georgie on their block.

George Bush has bought a new house in a wealthy part of Dallas, called Preston Hollow. The impending presence of a former President is ratcheting up security fears. “I am afraid with all the negative press the president has been getting, the whole neighborhood is going to be a target,” said a woman, who wouldn’t give her name. She carried her King Charles spaniel Friday past the Bushes’ new abode.

Other vecinos include Dallas Mavericks’ owner Marc Cuban and former presidential candidate Ross Perot.

Colombia Trade Deal Answers

So, if you’re like me and you tend to decide things without really having a full grasp of a situation, but can sense on a gut level why something is wrong–I found this article in the NYT’s about the Colombian Trade Agreement, Obama and Bush, and why there is so much tension around the whole thing. It answered a lot of my questions and helped me to further see and understand Erwin and LC’s separate thoughts–although I think that the article is incredibly lacking in explaining the Agreement from Colombia’s perspective–whether the perspective be from a unionist point of view or a ‘free trade’ point of view.

An excerpt:

Mr. Bush has drawn his line at the automakers’ doors, having already been forced to shelve the free-market principles of his Republican Party to bail out the financial industry over the past two months. But Republicans say he would acquiesce in aid to automakers in return for Congress’s ratification of the Colombia pact and pending trade agreements with Panama and South Korea.

I still am inclined to believe that there’s nothing good about free trade, especially when it can be used to justify the silencing of violence against workers–but I am open to continuing to think about it.

obama_mail_500px.jpgWhile ICE raids cast a shadow on the themes of hope and change, President Elect Obama has begun to make a list of Bush initiatives he wants to overturn once he takes his place inside the Oval Office. Among them is what is known as the Global Gag Rule.

The new president is also expected to lift a so-called global gag rule barring international family planning groups that receive U.S. aid from counseling women about the availability of abortion, even in countries where the procedure is legal, said Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. When Bill Clinton took office in 1993, he rescinded the Reagan-era regulation, known as the Mexico City policy, but Bush reimposed it.

“We have been communicating with his transition staff” almost daily, Richards said. “We expect to see a real change.”

San Francisco Thinks Bush is Full Of…

1241-medium_oceansideWTP.jpgIn my hometown of Houston, George Bush Senior has an international airport named after him (the original name — “Intercontinental” was just fine) but in my adopted hometown of San Francisco, my fellow Friscans have come up with a particular honor for his son, Dubya. What better a place to represent the administration of George W. Bush than a sewage treatment center:

A group called the Presidential Memorial Commission has reportedly picked up more than enough signatures to put the ballot initiative to the San Francisco public in the November election.

If the measure passes, it would rename the city’s Oceanside Treatment Plant as the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

That’s not exactly a presidential library, but sponsors of the ballot measure say it’s a fitting tribute to a president who made a big mess.

It sounds like a joke but don’t mess with San Franciscans. We vote on all kinds of “crazy” measures such as a citywide gun ban and yep, they pass (though thanks to a Supreme Court decision today, that unfortunately might not last…so much for sovereignty!). Personally, I think that sewage plant is way too pretty to bear the Bush name.

Spaniards Hate Chavez More than Bush?

180px-Unnews_bush_chavez.jpgWow, that’s saying a lot, because the Spanish hate them some Dubya. According to a recent poll:

Spaniards dislike Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez most among world leaders, including U.S. President George W. Bush, a poll indicated.

The survey of 2,500 Spaniards in 2007 found the leftist Chavez ranks first among major world leaders the Spanish do not care for, ahead of the U.S. president and Cuba’s former leader Fidel Castro.

Bush was the most disliked world leader among Spaniards in the 2006 version of the poll, El Pais reported Friday.

I wonder how those two feel about being in the same category

Who holds the Spanish people’s heart in their hands? Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ranks as one of the most admired leaders for Spaniards.

Vicente Fox tells all about Bush

2004-11-21_bush_fox3.jpgFormer president of Mexico Vicente Fox is telling it like it is in his new autobiography, and he’s got a lot of things to say about his friend Dubya, whom he calls “the cockiest guy I’ve ever met”:

“My first impression of George W. Bush was one of total self-confidence. He is quite simply the cockiest guy I have ever met in my life,” Fox wrote, according to an advance copy of the book.

Except, perhaps, when it came to language skills. Fox said Bush was “a bit sheepish as he tried out his grade-school-level Spanish” at that meeting in Austin, Texas.

Bush wants Castro dead, Fidel strikes back

11:37 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba| Politics · Comments Off

p03-Bush_Castro.jpgGeorge W. Bush was predicting — or praying for — the death of Cuban president Fidel Castro yesterday. At an appearance at the U.S. Naval War College, Bush said, “One day, the good Lord will take Fidel Castro away,” to a cheering audience. According to the Washington Post, Dubya seemed to realize that this was an unsavory remark and began saying “No, no, no…” A White House spokesperson later said that the President was commenting on “an inevitable event”.

As was to be expected, Fidel had something to say about this little comment. In an article published yesterday in Cuba’s Granma newspaper, Castro wrote:

“…the spokesman of the White House National Security Council, Gordon Johndroe, when asked whether Bush was hoping for Castro’s death, replied: “The President was speaking about an inevitable event.” It would appear that the brilliant official and his boss are going to live for thousands of years.

Now I understand why I’ve survived the plans laid by Bush and the presidents who ordered my assassination: the Good Lord has protected me.”

I’m not sure why the Bush administration insists on making statements that only allow their foes — Castro and Hugo Chavez for example — to strike back and bolster their support among Bush haters.
