Graduation picture of African American Nicolas Heyward Jr., aged 14The Nicholas Naquan Heyward Jr. Memorial Foundation Inc.Invites you to our 16 Annual Day of Remembrance for Nicholas Heyward, Jr.

Nicholas was a 13 year old honor student from Boerum Hill Gowanus Houses, Killed by housing police, while playing cops & robbers. I met Nicolas Sr., in the late 1990′s when I was a teenager just getting politicized and working against police brutality in NYC during the “Giuliani Time”. Nicholas Sr., was one of the few fathers, among mothers who held marches, rallies, and followed then Mayor Giuliani, making sure that wherever he and his police chief was, so were we, with pictures of the dead. When Nicholas was killed all he was doing was playing, the way children should. When Nicholas was killed, the Housing Police were separate from the NYPD. So many years later, Nicholas’ father struggles on against a police force that has consolidated power and now runs the projects, the subways, and the schools (as well as the streets). So many years later, Nicholas and I see each other at rallies, now I have a child who will be the same age Nicholas was when he was shot and killed, and we hug, as parents, as fighters.

Rise Up For Safety!

12:51 pm By la Macha · GLBT|Justice|New York City|Violence · Comments Off

17 May 2010

In light of the murder of Amanda Gonzalez-Andujar, I found this call out for action to be especially timely and necessary. If you’re in the area, show your support however you can!

Join us at Rise Up For Safety!
Sunday, May 23 from 1pm-4pm

Common Grounds
376 Tompkins Ave between Putnam and Jefferson
C to Kingston-Throop, B52 to Tompkins, B26 to Tompkins, B43 to Jefferson

Stand up for safety will be a chance for community members to join our training team of people interested in helping to train Safe Spaces for our Safe Neighborhood Campaign. It will also be a chance for people to learn about our new and current safe spaces, learn tools to be Safe OUTside the System, and get involved in the Campaign.

The Safe Neighborhood Campaign seeks to end hate and police violence against LGBTSTSTGNC people of color in Central Brooklyn. The goals of the Safe Neighborhood Campaign are to empower community members to prevent violence before it starts, intervene while violence is happening, and to build stronger relationships between LGBTSTSTGNC (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Non Conforming) people of color, our allies, and the broader community. Eventually we hope to build the relationships and skills between S.O.S. members and safe spaces to hold attackers accountable, to investigate violent incidents, and to provide direct support to community members outside of law enforcement.

Somos Indios

11:18 am By Maegan La Mala · New York · Comments Off

5 Oct 2005

bobby.jpg Part of celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is about deconstructing what makes a Hispanic/Latino. For many of us that means looking at our indigenous roots. The YWCA of Brooklyn is helping to promote that by inviting Bobby Gonzalez, Puerto Rican/Taino scholar and storyteller. The family friendly event Tomorrow, October 6 titled Somos Indios! We are Indian! will discuss and illustrate the art, history, life ways, religions, outstanding leaders, and important events of the Indigenous Peoples of Central and South America and the Caribbean.
