COMMUNITY LEADERS AND ELECTED OFFICIALS MARCH AND RALLY TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST THE LGBTQS COMMUNITIES
Gay and straight leaders march and rally to combat violence against the gay community in New York. Called the LGBTQS United As One March and Rally, this non-political event is being organized by community leaders in the wake of devastating violence against the gay community, including an attack against a gay man in the restroom of the Stonewall Inn, the birthplace of the gay rights movement, and the abduction, unlawful imprisonment and sodomy of gay men by a gang in the Bronx. The LGBTQS United As One March and Rally also comes on the heels of suicides by young LGBTQ people related to their sexuality and targeted violence against straight residents for “looking” gay.Saturday, November 20, 2010

Celebrate with CASA – The Launching of ACHÉ!
The First Alternative Womyn’s Health & Wellness Cooperative in the South BronxCasa is launching the first Womyn’s Alternative Health and Wellness Cooperative – ACHÉ (Alternative Cooperative for Healing & Empowerment) for young and adult womyn this Fall. When you think of wildlife and fish swimming in rivers, the South Bronx is probably the last place that comes to mind. Congressman José E. Serrano wants to change your mind. On Tuesday the Bronx Rican Congressman helped release 200 alewife herring into the Bronx River. This is the first time in recent memory that a native species of herring have been reintroduced to the river, a long time toxic dumping ground. The fish are expected to be the seed colony for a breeding population. In a statement released to the press Serrano said:
For many years, the Bronx River was a dumping ground, a virtual dead zone for wildlife. That picture today is totally changed. In many spots it has become an urban oasis, a refuge from the concrete and steel of the city. Adding wildlife back will only serve to continue that shift from a mistreated backwater to a treasured resource for generations to come.

My friend Oso pointed me in the direction of a very intriguing documentary project being developed in the Bronx which proposes to explore how using social mediums such as blogs affects the lives of new immigrants:
What happens when immigrants in the Bronx start blogging? Can social media help people communicate better with friends and family back home? Can it help communities sustain themselves? The Bronx Blog Project is a multimedia documentary about community, immigration, homesickness, and technology. Focusing on the experiences of a handful of ESL students and utilizing video and the Internet, the project documents the effects of new communication technologies on people looking for better, cheaper ways to communicate to friends and family both in the United States and their home countries, and wishing to develop and maintain new communities in the U.S.

The wintry cold is already here in NYC and many of my fellow city dwellers are dreading their heating bills and/or rent increases that may come as the price of heating oil rises. Controversial Venezuelan Presidente Hugo Chavez wants to soften the blow a bit for the poor and non-profits that serve them in the South Bronx. Eight-million gallons of heating oil is being sold super cheap via CITGO, the Houston-based subsidiary of Venezuela’s national oil company. A similar program was also announced for Massachusetts.
