It’s Viernes Social which means it’s time to put on yur dancing shoes and ir a rumbear! If you’re lucky enough to be in the New York City area tonight, you can head over to SOB’s to share the Plena Libre experience with me. If not, then you need to head to your local cd spot and pick up Plena Libre’s 11th and latest cd, Evolución. Gary Núñez and his crew have put forth a dancable and musically relevant cd that stays true to the roots of Afro-Boricua music in all its forms.
Mujeres en Nueva York : You can be la Bomba

This weekend in New York City women will have the chance to learn the Afro-Puerto Rican dance and music style known as Bomba. Nyree Feliciano of Bomba Boricua is offering a Bomba workshop for women only tomorrow October 8th and Sunday October 10th at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center, 107 Suffolk Street, Room 203, in Manhattan.
Bomba is not just a music and dance of celebration; it was used as a language in and of itself, as a way for slaves to communicate and plan rebellions.
Bomba has its roots on the coasts of Puerto Rico where West African slaves and their descendents worked the sugar cane fields. Bomba is not just a music and dance of celebration; it was used as a language in and of itself, as a way for slaves to communicate and plan rebellions.
The workshop is limited to 12 participants so please call (212) 533-6466 to reserve space. The cost is $60 for both classes.
