Fox News thinks bloggers are evil

And Bill O’Reilly thinks bloggers are “radical Internet assassins”. Have a laugh with this collection of asinine Fox News soundbites, then bask in the guilty pleasure of being a reader of such an evil publication, just another a “vicious far left website”.

Latina blogger on mainstream media

Blog%2BImage_thumb_andersoncooper.gifI was lucky enough to catch blogger Alisa Valdes Rodriguez’s appearance on Anderson Cooper 360 the other night. It’s so great to see bloggers participating in the debate over immigration within the context of mainstream media, which seems to be doing more to divide than unite. Alisa told it like it is with regard to the media’s portrayal of this issue:

…you’ve also got tens of thousands of undocumented Irish in Boston. You’ve got 100,000 Nigerians living in and around Houston. And my point is if this is truly an issue, if immigration is the issue — illegal immigration, you should show a variety of faces. Because the way that the American media are covering the issue right now, it’s becoming an anti-Latino story.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen stories that equate Mexican, illegal, Latino, Hispanic, using those words interchangeably and also using them to mean Spanish speaking. Where in my state of New Mexico, which is a majority Hispanic state, only 14 percent of the people speak Spanish at all.

layout_01.jpgMy friend Oso pointed me in the direction of a very intriguing documentary project being developed in the Bronx which proposes to explore how using social mediums such as blogs affects the lives of new immigrants:

What happens when immigrants in the Bronx start blogging? Can social media help people communicate better with friends and family back home? Can it help communities sustain themselves? The Bronx Blog Project is a multimedia documentary about community, immigration, homesickness, and technology. Focusing on the experiences of a handful of ESL students and utilizing video and the Internet, the project documents the effects of new communication technologies on people looking for better, cheaper ways to communicate to friends and family both in the United States and their home countries, and wishing to develop and maintain new communities in the U.S.

Nuyorker: a new blog en español

nuyorker.jpgMy friend Oso tipped me to Nuyorker, a new blog that just launched that’s all about NYC, in Spanish. I must say it immediately got my attention because the first post I read was about rapper 50 Cent’s entrepreneurial endeavors — apparently he is promoting his own line of vibrators:

El hip hopero y actor de cine 50 cent va a sacar una linea de “sex toys”. El articulo estrella es una version de 50 cent motorizado con un vibrador igualito a su miembro viril, pero azul (salvo que 50 lo tenga realmente azul) “para que todas las chicas puedan experienciar lo que es tener sexo con 50″.

Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul Blog

chicksouplatino.jpg The book, Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul, launched on August 9th, 2005. As a promotional effort, one of the co-authors, Susan Sánchez-Casal, has launched a website and a blog including podcasts. The website allows visitors to read sample stories from the book; they are really quite endearing and at the same time, eye opening. Retelling memories of their family, their experiences, and their lives, the authors and contributors find a way to bring you with them as they tell their stories.

The blog is being updated weekly so far, basically just with podcasts of excerpts from the book. I found them a little dry, but please keep in mind that I’m not big on audio books, either!
